Pulsatilla grandis (Wender, 1831)

Spring has come to Vienna.
Just as early as last year.

Just returned from today's trip to some of the dry grasshills a few miles south of Vienna, where they may be seen growing in abundance:

The Hungarian Pasque Flower
Pannonische Grosse Kuhschelle
Stor kubjřlle
Pulsatille vulgaire
Sasanka zwyczajna
poniklec veľkokvetý
koniklec velkokvětý
Сон великий прострел большой

Kingdom: Plantae
Division: Magnoliophyta
Class: Magnoliopsida
Order: Ranunculales
Family: Ranunculaceae
Genus: Pulsatilla

Pulsatilla grandis is a surprisingly large and conspicuous spring flower that can be seen on dry limestone hills with Pannonian vegetation near Vienna. It may be found in uncultivated grassland only. The plant with single blossoms each may be found growing in large groups. Very much dependant on receiving lots of sunlight Pulsatilla grandis will disappear at once when other herbs are taking over after any kind of fertilization.

Pulsatilla grandis will grow up to 15 cm, later on even 30 cm in height, with the flower as shown here measuring approximately 5 - 7 cm in diameter.

The plant is perennial. Blossoms can be seen in March and April. Dense hairs on petals and stem are a perfect protection both against cold night time temperatures and dry and windy conditions at daytime. Along with its habitat the species is endangered, and strictly protected.

SONY DSC-H5, 3072 x 2304 pixel, sRGB, 6mm wideangle macro, F/8, 1/400 sec., ISO-125; no tripod, no flash, elbows and body flat on the ground; 15.03.2008, 14:34.

Photoshop Elements, cropped to the left and the right, downsized to web presentation, selectively resharpened, brightness, contrast and saturation slightly adjusted.

The picture was taken on top of Hochberg, an isolated hill covered with vinyards, pine forest and a patch of grassland right in the centre of the medieval village of Perchtoldsdorf, now a suburb of Vienna.

Thank you.

Hallo Peter
Beautiful image with great colours. The blue sky really add speciality to this portrait. Wonderful detail seen on this flower from your fine camera work. The fine hair that surrounds the flower is spectacular and adds a special touch to this special photo. The yellow anthers are well in focus and the detail is clear and well visible. I am sure by now you know that I love purple and could not pass this one. A very sunny and inviting photo. Good framing applied. Thanks for sharing.
Kind regards
