Eichkogel near Moedling to the south of Vienna on a refreshingly cool sunny morning, some clouds showing up bringing rain again from the west at noon. A good time to be out in the field on the hills of the Vienna woods.

Crataegus monogyna was in full blossom at the edge of the forest, and among some Green Veined Whites, Orange Tips, Wall Browns and Queen of Spain Fritillaries, a few Swallowtail butterflies were chasing each other in the grassland. With a cloud arriving to cover the sun for a while it was an easy thing to watch them seeking shelter, taking seat and spreading their wings on their resting places in order to collect the remaining rays of warmth from the hidden sun.

Papilio machaon (Linnaeus, 1758)
ssp. gorganus (Fruhstorfer, 1922)
Family: Papilionidae.

Wingspan 60 - 80 mm

European Swallowtail, Schwalbenschwanz, Koninginnepage, Makaonfjäril, Svalehale, Svalestjert, Swellesturtflinter, Ritariperhonen, Machaonas, Makaon, Macaone, Le Grand Porte-queue, Fecskefarkú lepke, Lastin rep, Paź królowej, Vidlochvost fenyklový, Otakárek fenyklový, Махаон, бабочка, метелик, Голям полумесец, მაქაონი , ...

One of the most popular species of butterflies, and the many names in different languages may indicate its wide distribution over practically the whole palaearctic region including most parts of Europe, from the lowlands up to the mountains well above 2000 meters above sea level. In spite of its wide distribution considered to be not very common. The Swallowtail's populations seem to have been in decline for decades, and the species is red listed in Austria as endangered.

So it is good to report from recent time that the European Swallowtail seems to be living again in good numbers in Alpine regions as well as in some of the eastern lowlands.

There are two to three generations from April to October, one generation in the mountains. Caterpillars are feeding on Apiaceae and Rutaceae.

Hallo Peter
Wow! This is really stunning, and a most pleasant sight. The rich and vibrant colours of the butterfly are striking. Great focus and sharp details. This photo is of high quality and really outstanding and it is jam packed with awesome detail and features. It is actually difficult to describe the beauty of this butterfly. I don't know why but unopened blossoms always attract my eye, and here it is no exception. It just adds that extra touch to this already beautiful image. Perfectly framed and pleasing to the eye. Thanks for sharing it was a pleasure to look at.
Kind regards

Hi, dear Peter.
I am very glad to watch your new shot of the fine scene. POV on butterfly from behind the wonderful flowers are amazing as well as the DOF and presentation of all main pictured objects in focus. I like fruitful use of fill flash. As usual composition is great. Only our swallowtails have more rich yellow colour tone. Many thanks for sharing and kind regards.
Yours Alexei.

Hello Peter,
A fine capture of both the Crataegus flowers and the P. machaon taken from an unusual POV against the sunny morning sky. The composition is delightful and the sharpness and DOF excellent, especially as it was a relatively low aperture.
TFS this beauty,
Best wishes, Ivan

I love the composition of this photo. The butterfly seems to be whole world! Such a creative POV. The depth of field is perfect for creating the feeling that I experienced.

i love that unusual point of view, very different from the numerous macros one can see
well managed, original, congrats
