Boloria selene (Denis & Schiffermüller, 1775)

Small Pearl-Bordered Fritillary, Sumpfwiesen-Perlmutterfalter, Zilveren maan, Brunlig perlemorsommerfugl, Brunflekket perlemorvinge, Brunfläckig pärlemorfjäril, Niittyhoperhopeatäplä, Dostojka selene, Petit collier argenté, Selene, ...

Family: Nymphalidae
Subfamily: Heliconiinae

Wing span: 38 – 41 mm

After a long break, I am taking a rainy autumn day’s evening to report that the summer of 2010 has been a rather short and rainy one in the Austrian Alps, same as the summer of 2009. Short periods of hot days were followed by long periods of cool weather with frequent showers of rain. Butterflies could be seen in abundance, however, and cool weather conditions were slowing them down, making them a bit easier to approach for a picture.

Boloria selene is a regular sight up there: Widespread in the temperate zone of the Northern hemisphere, the species is a regular inhabitant of Alpine meadows up to 2200m above sea level, bivoltine with two generations in May/June and July/August in warmer regions, univoltine at higher latitudes and altitudes in July.

Selene loves humid alpine meadows in rich blossom, moorland, meadows in wooded river valleys, marshy areas near lakes. And, like many of its genus, it loves to visit blossoms of raspberry and bramble. Here it is seen on Rubus idaeus (Himbeere) - just before taking off.

Caterpillars feed on Viola.

Hello Peter,
It's nice to see one of your butterflies again, so well captured in your characteristic way!
The underside view of the open wings against a fine hazy sky while this B. selene rests on some bramble flowers makes this a very attractive image. The sharpness and natural colours, sharpness, excellent composition and POV contribute to a superb portrait of this Fritillary.
Thanks and kind regards,
Ivan

Lieber Peter,
Anne

An amazing capture Peter, from a unique viewpoint which shows the underwing details to a perfection against that cloudy sky backdrop. The pattern and colouration are also reproduced quite finely in your pleasant composition.

Hi, Peter, again.
As always I love such POV. It is really amazing and givers unusual and very attractive look. Both butterfly and plants are reproduced precisely. I also like wonderful a bit cloudy sky as a BG. Fill flash is great for such scenes. My compliments and kind wishes.
Alexei.

Very nice Peter, Bravo :)
I especially like your dynamic POV, well done!!

Hallo Peter

Hallo Peter,

Although we previously didn't know each other, I'm glad you're back to TN, because I see you as a great contributor of the site. This photo's quite good, unfortunately sun didn't shine, but in the note you explained why. :) Nice details, well chosen POV, an interesting underside portrait. Well done, tfs.

Best regards from the "neighbourhood" (Ungarn), László

Hallo Peter,

Dieter

Hello Peter,
such an amazing shot. I looks as if it not real. Very crisp image and very well detailed shot. The pattern and markings are excellently defined. Again you use the sky as the background, it gives a dramatic and magnificent effect.
