Kanetisa circe (Fabricius 1775)
Great Banded Grayling
Le Silène
Weißer Waldportier
Wing span: 60 - 65mm.
The largest species of European Graylings is on the wing from early June to September at dry grassy, bushy places. Widespread and once locally common from the Mediterranean through most of southern Central Europe, now decreasing in numbers, endangered.
Larval host plants: Various grasses, e.g. Festuca ovina, Bromus erectus.
The butterfly's conspicous upper sides of wings would only be seen in flight but hardly ever at rest. After decades, this is my first lucky capture showing Circe with wings widely open.
Literature:
Tom Tolman, Richard Lexington, Collins Butterfly Guide, London 2009.

Hi Peter, this is a great post, the butterflies experts knows that it's very very difficult to take this species with the open wings,i seen many times the circe in my country but i haven't an open wings pic in my archive. 2 beautiful view from above to see the secret side of this big butterfly,i like it! Have a nice week and thanks,Luciano
Adorable capture, Peter.
It is pleasure to see you posting off and on. Mercifully, you have not withdrawn completely from this rather truncated site.
The focus is pin sharp and the details and colours on the wings are beautiful.

Lieber Peter,
Bravo.
Herzliche Grüsse aus Bern
anne,
Hi Peter,
Very nice shot. And a very difficult one as well - I myself never managed to make a useful photo of this beauty. I love the focus was taken to the closest square millimetre of the wing, so no out-of-focus closer parts. Perfect exposure, nice details on both blacks and whites.
I understand you rather spend your time in the nature, not in front of a PC, but sometimes please visit us here in the future, too. Like you did now. You're always welcomed here.
Kind regards from Ireland, László
