Family: Nymphalidae

Distribution: widely over Europe and northern Asia, and quite common.
In Central Europe, from March to October several generations can be seen each year.

Wingspan: 40-50mm

Family: Zygaenidae

Distribution: from central, southeastern and eastern Europe to Mongolia, but very local and rather rare. Preferring meadows at the edges of forests of rather high humidity. Can be seen flying from June to July.


The picture was taken during a mountain trip to the top of Schneeberg, lower Austria’s highest mountain (2067m), passing a lush mountain meadow from Losenheim to Fadensteig at an altitude of approximately 1000m, in the morning of July 4, 2004.

Camera: Minolta Dimage 7Hi, with integrated tele-zoom and macro. No tripod, no flash. 2560x1920, sRGB, 51mm, F/5.6, 1/250sec, ISO-100. Downsized to the web.

Hallo Peter,
wieder einmal ein wundervolles Bild - wow - Du hast stets so ausgefallene Flattermänner hier, wußte gar nicht dass man die in unseren Breitengraden finden kann. Außer dieser Blume - die haben wir auch hier - ich hatte schon mal eine Kollage der verschiedenen Wachstumsstadien hier ;-)
