Zygaena osterodensis (Reiss, 1921)
Platterbsenwidderchen
Family: Zygaenidae

Wingspan: approx. 35 – 40mm

Distribution: from central, southeastern and eastern Europe to Mongolia, but very local and rather rare. Dry meadows at the edges of forests. Can be seen flying from June to July.

Feeding plants: Vicia, Lathyrus.

The Zygaenidae family is distributed worldwide, approximately 800 species have been described. Approximately 100 species are reported from the Palaearctic region, about 40 from Europe and North Africa. They are small day active moths, usually very colourful in appearance. They show iridescent black upper wings, dotted red or yellow, and red under wings. There is a fascinating variety within a rather uniform pattern of colours and markings. It pays to have a look into the complete illustrated listings of Zygaenids at the excellent Italian website of Moths and Butterflies of Europe and North Africa: www.leps.it

Zygaenids are poisonous, effectfully showing off their warning colours. Among other badly tasting substances, the body of Zygaenids contains hydrocyanic acid. They inhabit an enormous variety of habitats from arid to humid, from the lowlands up to the alpine regions, from the South to the North. There are a few very wide spread and common species such as Zygaena filipendulae, the Six spotted Z., or Zygaena trifolii, the Five spotted Zygaena. Many other species like the pictured one are rather local and rare. But all of them are quite easy to photograph as they are slowly moving and not very shy.

The picture was taken during a mountain trip to the top of Schneeberg, lower Austria’s highest mountain (2067m), passing a lush mountain meadow from Losenheim to Fadensteig at an altitude of approximately 1000m, in the morning of July 4, 2004.

Camera: Minolta Dimage 7Hi, with integrated tele-zoom and macro. No tripod, no flash.

Hope you enjoyed this posting.
Have a nice day.

Hello Peter,

This is an excellent composition with beautiful details, colors, POV, exposure and BG.

The flower is quite pretty as well, a great place for a moth to rest.

Hallo Peter,
