Aurora in the violets.

Orange Tip

Anthocharis cardamines (Linnaeus, 1758), male,
resting on Viola (possibly Viola reichenbachiana).

Family: Pieridae, Whites.

The Orange Tip is distributed from China through temperate Asia to Central, Southern, and Western Europe, Scandinavia up to the polar circle, the UK and Ireland. Not reported from the Scottish Highlands and Southern Spain.

Caterpillars feed on Cruciferaceae, Cardamine, Turritis, Sisymbrium. Butterflies can be seen from the lowlands up into the mountains at 2000m above sea level, from March to the End of June in one generation, depending on the local climate.

The species shows sexual dimorphism. Only the males show the orange tips on their upper wings. Females are white:

The undersides of the wings show a greenish contour dissolving pattern, making the butterfly well camouflaged.

For a perfect camouflage at the resting position, the bright orange tips of the forewings may totally disappear under the hindwings.

Green pigments are usually not available in the Pieridae family (Whites). At Anthocharis cardamines there are bright yellow scales on the under sides of wings mixed with black scales, creating the impression of shaded olive green by additive colour mixing – a property of the human eye that seems to be shared by most other beings that could be dangerous to the Orange Tip.

The picture was taken at the edge of pine and oak shrubs in a forest meadow totally covered with Viola and Adonis vernalis on Mödlinger Eichkogel, 350m above sea level, near the medieval town of Mödling, Lower Austria. There were a number of Orange Tips on that meadow that day at the same time, chasing each other and sucking nectar from violets. No females were to be seen yet.

Photoshop Elements: Picture cropped, selectively sharpened, contrast and brightness reduced to keep a well detailed white surface of wings. Resized to 800 x 800 pixels.

Thank you for looking.
Have a very good day.

Hallo Peter,
Also Waidmanns heil auch Dir.
Ich wünsche Dir und Deiner Familie ein schönes Osterfest.
