Adonis.

Adonis vernalis (Linnaeus, 1753)

Adonide gialla,
Adonide de printemps,
Adonisröschen, Frühlings-Adonis, Teufelsauge.

Heighth of the plant: 15 - 30 cm,
diameter of blossoms: 50 - 80 mm.

Strikingly large and colourful flower of spring, to be found in Eastern European grasslands from Southern Russia through Hungary to Slovenia, Slovakia, Austria, Moravia, Eastern and Southern Germany. In the west of its natural range of distribution the plant has become very rare. It grows in dry grassland locations in poor soil on limestone, asks for a lot of sun, and it disappears at once after any kind of fertilization.

The plant is strictly protected.

There are a few spots along the xerothermic hills between vineyards between Vienna and the city of Baden. At these locations, Adonis vernalis can be seen at the same locations as Pulsatilla grandis, the Hungarian Pasque Flower, as shown to TN of view days ago.

> Pulsatilla grandis.

The Austrian name "Teufelsauge" - Devil's Eye - seems to refer to the high toxic content of the plant, containing heart glycosides in lethal doses to all kinds of mammals.

An insect that can be frequently seen visiting the Adonis - in that picture hidden at the lower right corner, is: Lygaeus saxatilis (Scopoli 1763), Ritterwanze, Bodenwanze, True Bug.

> Poison plant and poison bug.

Location:
A limestone hill called Eichkogel, near the town of Moedling, South Eastern Lower Austria.

Postwork by Photoshop Elements: slightly sharpened, contrasts adjusted, slightly cropped at the sides, downsized to the web.

Thank you for looking.

Happy Easter!

Hi Peter,
Very vivid and beautiful colors in this shot. The flower is very big compared to the overall size of the plant. The detail is very sharp, and DOF is superb in this shot.

Hallo Peter,

Hi Peter
"Yellow is the colour of my true love's hair,
In the morning, when we rise,
In the morning, when we rise,
That's the time, that's the time, I love the best..." Donovan.

I realise this is not 'hair' or anyone’s 'true love', but the words of this song jumped straight to my mind when I saw these lovely flowers. Maybe it is because they tend to jump out of the frame with their beautiful yellow colour.
Excellent details, stunning impact, and very well presented.
Great work and TFS.
Regards
Loot
