Coenonympha gardetta.

Coenonympha gardetta (de Prunner, 1798).
Alpine Heath

Family: Satyrinae / Nymphalidae

Wingspan: 30 - 32mm.

Let us stay with the Nymphs and follow them into the grass. In the Tyrol, there is a pretty orange brown little species that is restricted to higher elevations of the Alpine mountains. These small butterflies with a chain of eye spots on the under side of wings can be seen locally on mountain meadows from 1500 meters to 2500 meters above sea level. Where they exist, they sometimes occur in large numbers in July and August, flying short distances, and resting deep down in the grass.

At lower elevations below 2000 meters, a variation may be observed with eye spots on the underside of hind wings conspicuously enlarged, as with the butterfly shown. That variation is called forma macrophthalmica (Staudinger).

Caterpillars feed on grass (Poa, Festuca, etc.)

The location:

A remote mountain meadow called “Rotes Mürle” between pine forest at an elevation of 1900 meters above sea level, near the village of Gries im Sulztal, Oetztal valley, Tyrol.

Another great shot, Peter!

Great POV above all, i like it a lot beacuse it makes the light come towards the butterfly, appearing like a small aura around the tip of its wings,
Good exposure, lovely colors, excellent details, nice framing and DOF.
Very well done

Bravo and TFS

Hallo Peter, dieser Falter ist besonders schön. Super Foto! Danke Dir.
Gruß aus Ostwestfalen.

Hi Peter.
You do not cease to surprise with your the delightful pictures. One work is better another. From your picture there is a sensation, that the butterfly is not on your picture, but at me in a room. Exclusive reflection of all details of the butterfly (paints, fibers, DOF etc.). Superb done. TFS.

Hi Peter,
a perfect shot! details and colors are beautifull! back light is amazing!
perfect BG and POV!!
5* shot!!

A beautiful backlit shot, and a perfect illustration of the species. I am particularly impressed by your careful use of sharpening - I find that images of these hairy-winged species are easily ruined by oversharpening, which makes the soft hairs look like glass spines.
Thanks again :) Nigel.

Beautifull, one, *Macro, butterfly, congratulation,
