Doronicum glaciale (Wulfen) Nyman

Alpine Doronicum,

Genus: Doronicum L.
Family: Asteraceae
Order: Asterales
Class: Magnoliopsida
Division: Magnoliophyta
Kingdom: Plantae

When days are rapidly getting shorter in autumn, and frost starts to embrace the Alpine mountains from the highest peaks down into the shady valleys, a good time has arrived for looking back on the bright long days of summer.

Sulztal is a remote and unspoiled side valley of the Tyrolese Oetztal valley. When hiking up there your tracks will lead you to peaks well above 3000 meters above sea level, many of them surrounded by glaciers.

The peak in the background is one out of many, and not very famous at all. It is called "Mutterberger Seespitze" and measures about 3300 meters. The picture was taken at an elevation of approximately 2700 meters above sea level on the way up to another peak called "Schrankogel", reaching 3500m.

When entering the Alpine region of permanent ice, it always comes as a surprise to see a very rich flora that is able to produce some remarkably large and colourful flowers during the short summer months of July and August. These plants are able to suffer temperatures well below the freezing point at night or at bad weather, and also really hot temperatures when the summer sun is shining with merciless power from a clear blue sky.

One of these high Alpine heroes is the plant shown here. The Alpine Doronicum (Doronicum glaciale), is an endemite of the Alps and can be found in elevations between 1600m and 2900m on poor stony soils above silicate as well as above limestone. The vital plant reaches a size of up to 400mm in height, diameter of blossoms up to 60mm. It grows out of a prennial rhizome that seems to last for many years.

The name "Doronicum", used by the Swedish botanic Carolus Linnaeus for at least 6 species, seems to be of arabic and persian origin: "daraniya" for gold, referring to the colour of the conspicous blossoms of that genus of Asterales.

Postwork: very little. Photoshop Elements, downsized to the web, selective sharpening and noise removal, contrast and luminance slightly adjusted.

Hope you enjoy. Thank you for looking.
Have a very good day.

Thank you.

Hi Peter!
My first view of today's posts, and what a wonderful start to my day with this lovely mountain shot with those yellow flowers staring me in the eye!
Very creative composition, fit for a picture post-card. I love the way the flowers contrast with the the blurred view of mountains and sky in the BG.
Many thanks for making my day.

What a sight! Amazing composition. those lovely little flowers and then in the background those gigantic mountains. Love the DOF.

Superb shot Peter. Those flowers growing up so close tho the snow, but to see the snow like this in the BG is just great! TFS

Hello Peter!

Beautifull landscape. Great colours composition - cold blue sky and mountains and warm yellow flowers. I like this kind of POV with two subjects on different planes. As always great note.

Hello Peter

What a wonderful composition!
The flowers are beautiful and the mountains are impressive! Great idea with the double focusing, so very pleasant WS picture, as well.
Excellent POV and DOF, very nice colors and lighting.
All-in-all a great post, my friend!

Bravo and TFS

I like this a lot. The low POV is great and the mountains form an extravagant backdrop for the flowers. Very nicely executed. Well done & TFS!

Hallo peter !
Vielen Dank,

Hi Peter!
I'm new here at TN. This is my first critique...
Well, this is certainly a very beautiful shot. The flowers focused, with the light from the back and the background blurred.
I was just wondering what kind of effect would have done having also the background in focus...

Thanks, Enrico.

Hello Peter,
This is a great composition and very good idea. I would probably use a polirizing filter to gain more contrast between blue sky and yellow flowers.
Thank You for sharing.

Nicely done Peter.
Excellent POV and thoughtfully composed.
Interesting light, great detail & color. This combination of landscape/flower closeup is a treat for the eye :)
Have a Great Weekend mf.

Hi Peter,

An excellent shot, very well composed,it is not that often seen that the flowers shown on TN have this kind of BG,very well seen and captured,

Hallo Peter,

Hi Peter,
Excellent pair of shots focusing flowers and mountains that accentuate the travel from one to another subject. Organized, highly estructured matter, plenty of colour, full of live in the flower. Cool, distant, symbolic power in the mountain.
An extremely beautiful contrast between foreground and background, very aesthetic and suggestive.
Best regard my friend,
José M.

Hello Peter: what a great composition. The only thing that keeps me from getting too homesick (looking at your pics) are our Canadian Rockies nearby. The view is fantastic and the colors complementary. If I concentrate, I can hear echoes of distant yodelers.

Hi Peter.
Outstanding POV and idea as always. Great landscape, which is underlined by flowers, or perfect flowers, whose beauty is underlined by wonderful landscape. Riches of interpretations is an attribute of a class of work. Bravo.

Hallo Peter,

Hi Peter,
What makes this image is its wonderful angle and perspective.I can only guess you were lying on your back when you took it!!The reflected light on the underside of the flowers illuminates them so well and the clarity and detail (down to the hairs on the stalk) are very good.Have a good day!
Regards, david

Hi Peter,

What a very good photo of the splendid nature of Austria. A good composition and a beautiful background.
With thanks too and regards,

What a glorious shot of the "gold-aster" as it is tracking the sun in the sky! Great background which although not famous is remarkable just the same!

I like the PoV, I can just imagine lying on my back to get a GOOD shot... Toe to toe eh! ;) The clarity is great and I like the colours in the shot, blue-green-yellow, all in the family! Excellent compo. Tfs, Jay

great pic! TFS Ori
