Erebia alberganus,
the Almond-eyed Ringlet.

Erebia alberganus (de Prunner 1798)
Almond-eyed Ringlet
Gelbäugiger Mohrenfalter
Erebia de Manchas Anaranjadas

Genus: Erebia
Subfamily: Satyrinae
Family: Nymphalidae

Wing span 38 – 45 mm.

The Almond-eyed Ringlet (Erebia alberganus) can be found in a number of isolated areas in European mountain regions: the Cantabrian mountains of Northern Spain, the Alps from Alpes maritimes to Southern Switzerland, the Tyrol, Carinthia, Italian Dolomites, the Appenine, the Balkan. The species is reported from elevations between 900m and 2200m, preferring well protected meadows within forests on sunny southern slopes.

Butterflies are on their wings in one extended generation from June to August in one generation. As with all the other Erebia butterflies, caterpillars feed on grass: Festuca ovina, Anthoxanthum odoratum.

The Location:

Winnebach – alpine meadows with rich vegetation on the steep southern slopes above Gries im Sulztal, Oetztal, Tyrol, at an elevation of 1750 meters, at cool, windy, occasionally sunny weather. Had to step down a steep slope through slippery wet grass, and lots of cow dung to capture that portrait of a species I have never seen before.

The Camera:

SONY DSC-H5, 3072 x 2304 pixel, sRGB, 14mm, F/4, 1/160 sec., ISO-125; handheld, no flash; 13.07.2006, 11:26.

Photoshop Elements. Cropped, downsized to web, selectively sharpened, levels slightly adjusted.

the colours in this picture really do the b'fly great justice, taking nothign from the simple and elegant beauty of this brown b'fly. The composition, POV, DOF are all spot on.

Danke Peter,

Hi Peter,
Excellent shot full of beautiful colors.
Nice point of view and details.
Well done.

Hello Peter.

Excellent image, very good details and colors.

Jose Luis.

What wonderful sharpness you achieved here Peter. You managed perfect depth of focus. I like the centered composition of the butterfly on the grass head.

Hi Pieter,
Looks very similar to the Lesser Mountain Ringlet you posted. Excellent color, DOF, POV, and exposure. Great details, and well seen and contrasted to the uniform green BG.
Very well done.

Hello Peter,
I love those little orange, brown and white "eyes" on the fringes of the wings.
What beautiful markings on this already beautiful brown colored wings/
The details are spot on, and the DOF really makes the subject stand out.

Hi Peter

Another...you know what...i like spontaneity and just because you were sure i was going to say that word, i'm going going to call this one "Spots" :)))))
A beautiful capture, my friend!
I especially like the contrast with that lovely blurred BG here - they look si nice next to one-another.
Also very good definition on the little spots from the wings, charming colors and excellent POV.
I'm assuming that the crop and parhaps the compression to 200kB made the sharpness a bit softer than usual, but it's really no bigdeal :)

Cheers and TFS

Hi Peter.
Airiness and lightness of your picture are fantastic as well as the thinness of the light-green colour tone of the BG. I like great "soft" sharpness of the butterfly and reproduction of its "hair" ("fuzz") very much. Details of the ear is perfect too. Composition is perfect. BRAVO, my dear friend. Once more your piece of photo art.
TFS and best wishes.

Hallo Peter,
Gruss. Sky

Hi Peter

Simply stunning work my friend. You have captured and reproduced this butterfly with such amazing flair and quality. I just love every bit of the photo.

Technically (as usual with most, if not all of your posting) this one is in a class of its own and perfectly faultless. The visual impact is running high and it is this factor that makes your butterfly shots so distinguishable. That soft and evenly coloured BG is pure photographic magic as it stands in absolute contrast to the darker coloured butterfly and gives it the impression that it might fly off the screen at any given moment.

Good work MF and TFS.
