2010 was a bad year for butterflies in Belgium. June too cold, July too dry, August too rainy… I didn’t see many species I saw last year. Of course, the most commons species can be seen, like this pretty Small Copper. I took it yesterday before the rain.
And very strange, just after taking this shot, I was attacked by 2 bees and bitten on my hand by a tiny greenish insect (I still feel some pain since yesterday). First time such things happen to me… Maybe insects are angry (like me!) because on the bad weather…

Lycaena phlaeas (Linnaeus, 1761)
Family : Lycaenidae
Common names: Small Copper, American Copper, Common Copper [En], Cuivré commun, Bronzé [Fr], Kleine vuurvlinder [Nl], Kleiner Feuerfalter [De], Czerwończyk żarek [Po], Benekli bakır kelebeği [Tu]

The upperside forewings are a bright orange with a dark outside edge border and with eight or nine black spots. The hindwings are dark with an orange border.
It is widespread and common across Europe, Asia and North America, and also found in North Africa south through Ethiopia.
It is found in a wide variety range of habitats from chalk downlands, heathland, woodland clearings to churchyards and waste ground in cities.
In bright sun it is a very active little butterfly with the males setting up small territories which they will defend vigorously against rival males or indeed any unlucky passing insect.
There are between two and three broods a year, fewer further north. In exceptionally good years, a fourth brood sometimes occurs in the south and adults can still be seen flying into November. The species overwinters as a caterpillar.

Hi Catherine.
A very hot summer in our region was great for butterflies and other insects. Despite the Belgium weather you managed to take and fine, colorful picture of a cute butterfly on so wonderful flower. Magnification and POV are amazing as well as details of the petals and butterfly. I also like cropping of the shot and its composition. With best wishes and TFS.

Ciao Catherine,
une très belle photo en macro de ce courant papillon, couleurs éclatantes et naturelles, une très jolie composition avec un bon effet de perspective à trois dimensions
Merci et félicitations
Bonne journée

Dear Catherine!

Some people even say it was a bad year for us human beings... Well, the butterfly you present us in your picture seems not having suffered too much, its a beauty. Together with the magnificent flower (Scabiosa?) it forms a delightful picture and the quite dark background highlights the butterfly as well as the flower at best. Indeed, the deep contrast creates a strong impact and attracts the viewer's interest.

Kind regards
