Last weekend, I noticed a tiny fly with green eyes on a yarrow (Achillea millefolium). Thanks to it, I discover this family, new for me.

Chaetorellia jacae Robineau-Desvoidy, 1830 ♂
Family: Tephritidae
Sub-family : Tephritinae
Common names: Téphrite de la Jacée [Fr]

There are nearly 5,000 described species of tephritid fruit fly, categorized in almost 500 genera. Most fruit flies lay their eggs in plant tissues, where the larvae find their first food upon emerging. The adults usually have a very short lifespan. Some live for less than a week.
The behavioral ecology of tephritid fruit flies is of great interest to biologists. Some fruit flies have extensive mating rituals or territorial displays. Many are brightly colored and visually showy. Some fruit flies show Batesian mimicry, bearing the colors and markings of dangerous insects such as wasps because it helps the fruit flies to avoid predators, even though the flies lack stingers.

The Tephritidae are grouped into several subfamilies. The Tephritinae sub-family contents 211 genera and 1859 species. The larva of Chaetorellia jacea feeds within capitulum of Centaurea sp. It is a tiny fly with green eyes, of 3,5-5mm length.

The contraption, Canon EF 100 mm F2.8 Macro USM, is not very expensive and does the job of lens and other that cost 10x the price. Congratulations and tell me how the idea of the Canon EF 100 mm F2.8 Macro USM came to mind!

Hello Catherine,
A superb close macro of this litle Tephritid Fruit Fly. It size can be seen by comparing it with the Yarrow flowers where it is feeding.
The POV shows the green eyes with excellent sharpness with a good DOF for a clear view of most of it in a pleasing composition.
Thanks and have a great weekend,
Ivan

Markus

Hello Catherine,
These eyes are splendid, the fly with green eyes look uncommon. Although insect is so small you managed to take it very well.
