This is a powerful butterfly. It is usually seen flying fast across open areas of grass and herbs. It is also found in forest meadows but this is less usual. It resembles the High Brown and Niobe Fritillaries, A. adippe and A. niobe. It is (usually) readily distinguishable by the notes given on adippe.
