[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
Wild Carp have robust, cylindrical bodies with golden yellow to brown sides, darker backs and a yellowish white belly. The paired fins and caudal fin are usually tinged with red, while the dorsal fin is greyish blue. The fish has a long dorsal fin, a short anal fin and four fleshy barbels round its mouth; Carp-Crucian Carp hybrids usually have only two barbels. Wild Carp grow more slowly than the artificially bred forms depending on the temperature of the water and the length of the summer. Under central European conditions, at four years old a fish may measure 35 cm and weigh 1 kg, while at 15 years it may measure 60cm and weigh 4kg. The fish become sexually mature at four to five years old. They spawn in the water margins of lakes and rivers at the end of May and in June, at temperatures of not less than 15 C (the optimum temperature is 18 C); the eggs are attached to aquatic plants. At a water temperature of about 15 C the young hatch in five days and at 20 C in three days. The newly hatched larvae measure about 5 mm and remain clinging to the plants until the yolk sac has been digested. The fry feed at first on plankton but soon change to prey they can find on the bottom together with water plants and seeds. Carp live in shoals. They hibernate in deep, muddy spots and do not feed during the winter. Carp are commercially valuable fishes but the wild form is hardly ever caught today because of the small size of the remaining population. It is important that the wild form is preserved, however, if new genes are to be introduced into the artificially bred forms. Size 40-80 cm, maximum 1 m
Weight 2-4 kg, maximum 30 kg
Fin formula D III-IV/15-22, A III/5-6
Fecundity 50,000-1.5 million eggs
Distribution Originally found in eastern Europe and southern Asia.

But Christmas Eve is long gone Jaap ;-))) [in Poland Carp is a must for Christmas Eve supper]. Great moment, real action shot. Almost underwater picture :-)

I see captured them with-out the hook then ;0)))
the carp are well seen, not sure about the large piece of bread, maybe smaller pieces next time.
though this has inspired me, I know a pond with wild stock in and though very shy they like to feed and sunbath in the gravely shallows so I am going on a fish hunt when the water warms up a fraction, though today when I checked it nothing was moving.

Jaap, another great capture here. Sharpness is perfect, as well as pov. Indeed, an action shot, and 1/1000 really worked well here.

Dag Jaap,

I like this one : it is so difficult to make a reasonable picture of fish in a pond, and this one is razor sharp with superb light : the specific feature of the mirror carps (the huge scales) comes out very well in those conditions. I do not share the comments about the size of the bread btw : its colour brings the extra touch that makes you open the thumnail wondering what this all is !

J'adore ces poissons. Ils viennent manger dans la main quand ils sont en confiance. Très belle prise de vue, belles couleurs. bravo.
