On my famous Wild Meadow, among the flowers and butterflies, I discover the fascinated world of hoverflies (Syrphidae). I observed 13 different species. The 12 above, plus Episyrphus balteatus not represented.

Syrphidae (Hoverfly or Flowerfly in English) is a fly family, part of the Diptera (2 winged insects).
Hoverflies use mimicry to hide from their predators (mostly birds or other insects...). Hoverflies are quickly mistaken for wasps, bees or bumblebees. The larvae are insectivores and many prey on aphids. It is an important natural enemy of pests. Some adult syrphid flies are also important pollinators.
Hoverflies do size from 3 mm to 25 mm. There are about 6000 different species described around the world, on every continent except Antarctica. In Belgium 311 syrphidae species were found. You can find the list here and more info on syrphidae.com.

Hello Catherine,
This is really fantastic. For me a hoverfly was a hoverfly, didn't know that there are so many species and probably some more. Very educational.
