A large, attractive hoverfly with black and white marks. A new one for my collection!

Scaeva pyrastri (Linnaeus, 1758)
Family: Syrphidae

Large for the Syrphini tribe at 13mm long.
Abdomen is dark, with six white, curved stripes. Markings are white, and broad towards the outer end, unlike in Eupeodes luniger and S. selenitica where they are yellow and comma shaped.
Also note that the inner ends of the bars on T3 & T4 are further forward than the outer, unlike in the scarcer S. selenitica.
This large hover fly may consume over 500 aphids during its larval stages. Larvae are light green with a white dorsal longitudinal stripe. (Sources: Bugg, Robert L. and Keith Edkins)

Hi Catherine. This is another beauty which you have taken. With sharp focusing and fine detail. From your POV we can see every little markings and haire on its body. Your use of the light has given natural colours. well taken TFS.

Hello Catherine,
A great macro of this hoverfly, S. pyrastri. The focusing on the body gives fantastic sharpness so that it is well seen against the white floral BG in a pleasing composition.

Un petit syrphe que je connais bien..il est assez abondant chez nous en Valais. Une image splendide aussi bien du point de vue netteté que par sa présentation et ses teintes trčs fines. Bravo!
