Hello my Friends!
Today short come back to something bigger than insects and totaly different that landscapes :)

This is a Kotschy's Gecko - Cyrtodactylus kotshyi (Steindachner, 1870) (Gekkonidae), one of only 4 species from this family known from continental Europe (the other are: Hemidactylus turcicus, Phyllodactyllus europaeus, and Tarentola mauritanica) - another 4 species are known from Canary Islands.

And here you have some basic facts about this species:

Distribution: SW Italy, SE Balkan Peninsula, Crimea, Western Asia.

Body size: about 10 cm (sometimes - rather rare - even up to 13 cm).

Life style: night active species.

Habitat: rather hot regions, usually with rocks and stones, very often in the villages and towns where it can be found on the walls (like this specimen), not rare next to source of light where night active insects are atracted.

And also some "technical details":
- period of day - late evening

- place - restaurant, next to WC where the light was turned on and night active insects were present

- distance to the object - about 50 cm

- additional "equipment":
- ladder (gecko was about 3 m above the ground level)
- torch (to "blind" reptile before it escaped)
- patience (before I took this photo gecko escaped 6 times!)
- understanding of the restaurant owner (really very important if you imagine that it is not very normal to see a person with camera, on the ladder, next to WC, who is trying to take a photo of a reptile...) ;>

As always thank you in advance for your time and comment!!! :>

Hi Radek

Indeed something a little different that your last few posts...but something you know i like a lot :)
This is a superb lizard and one i still haven't seen in real life. Maybe, if all goes well, i might come with you next year in one of your trips and then get the chance to see one :D
Anyway, i really love the typical poze you captured it here in as well as the nice contrast it makes with the BG.
The details and textures on its body are wonderful and very sharp and the diagonal composition is a bliss.
Superb work! Great note, too! (very funny last part!!!)

BRAVO and TFS

Hello Radomir,
Superb both technically and esthetically you have come up with a great shot of a Gecko, Kotschy's. The details and POV are superb and the general colouring would suggest that this species has some abilty to camouflage itself but colour changes in the skin.
Nice to see and thanks,
Best wishes, Ivan

You choose your posts well. It is clear, crisp and clean. Beyond the essentials, it is a striking angle from the top. The background allows for good focus on the subject. It is so very well noted...and it shows your skills both in science as well as photography. Very very good.

Hello Radomir,
I love Geckos! They seem to like staying at hotels and going to good restaurants!! We've seen them on the walls in Asia and Africa. This is a splendid capture showing pattern and texture very sharply. It makes me curious to see the other 3 species in Europe!
TFS and best wishes, Ulla

Hi Radomir,
yep...this one's just as good as the others! Excellent detail as i would expect from you, but it's the exposure of that bright white wall i'm most impressed with, it could have so easily gone wrong...you've done a great job here my friend. We have few large reptiles here in the uk, the biggest being the Sand Lizard (i think)...and these are rare and not often seen. A great sight to see, thanks.

Hi Doctor Radomir, superb gecko, I never see before this specie, thanks, great details and excellent sharpness, very well done, ciao Silvio

Buen enfoque, sobre todo en la parte central ( tiene dificultad :-) ) Disposición clásica y efectiva del reptil. Buena luz y naturalidad en los colores. Bonita. Un buen aliado para todos en las noches de verano.

Saludos.

Hi Radomir

A wonderful shot with great exposure - which must have been difficult with a white BG. The detail in the gecko is excellent.

Good DOF, color, and nice detail Radomir. I like the diagonal composition, and the image is well exposed.
Well done.
Howard

Hi Radomir,
and here is your latest contribution, a perfect shot of a Gecko. I know that they are very nervous and don't like being flashed at. And you're right about the reaction of the people: in Iran I tried to do the same; the hotel owner wanted to be helpful but chased the animal continuously away from me. Well done!
My best egards,
Dietrich

Cześć Radek
Ile też trzeba poświęcić czasu żeby zrobić takie fajne zdjęcie. Jakiej wytrzymałości potrzeba, zeby znieść wzrok ludzi pukających się w czoło i myślących "czego on tam szuka koło WC" ;)
Ania
