Family: Nymphalidae
Subfamily: Satyrinae
Genus: Pararge
Species: aegeria

Wingspan: Male: 46 - 52mm
Female: 48 - 56mm

Speckled Wood (Pararge aegeria)
Czech name: Okáč pýrový

Speckled Wood in the Czech Republic is rampant in all forest areas. He lives just only in the forest, mainly deciduous and mixed, from lowlands to mountains. Forests consisting of conifers only avoids.
Creates usually two, rarely three generations. First live from April to June, the second from July to August. In the mountains produces only one generation, the image of flying from May to June. The female lays eggs singly in isolated tufts of various wild grasses. After hatching larvae remain on the host plant, and later can climb over to other clusters. Their development takes different times depending on conditions. Pupate on the rocks or on the ground floor of the host plant. Winters in the pupae stage, or caterpillars in the 3rd undressing.
It is one of the few butterflies that can inhabit the contiguous forest stands. There are lighter and darker form. That's according to various researches mainly genetically influenced. Brighter males are territorial - the females are waiting for a suitable location. They have short wings and powerful chest muscles. Contrast, darker males seek females patrol flight and therefore have a larger wing, which is advantageous for longer flights.
Pararge aegeria creates several geographical races. In the Czech Republic live race called Pararge aegeria tircis.
This is not an endangered species, even in the last 100 years has increased its distribution area.

Edit: ID fixed, thanks to Anne for determining :-)

Hi Milos,
A very sharp macro of this lovely butterfly.Great light and a pleasant composition.
Jurek

Lovely Image . I like the placement of the subject in the frame and a kind of 3D effect because of the shadow of the butterfly.
