The Sengis or Giant Elephant-shrews are widely distributed in Central and East Afrika. The recognized four species living in dry forests mainly as single or in pairs. The food are mainly insects and other invertetrates, their eggs and larvae. All the species are very rare in zoos. The picture shows the first hand-reared individual of Checkered Sengi(Rhynchocyon cirnei macrurus) in the African pavillon at Prague Zoo. This subspecies lives in the coastal areas of S-Tanzania and N-Mozambique.

Very interesting species well captured with flash. tfs.

Fascinating animal Klaus. I'm glad you used a flash on this one. Very good detail and colours. It's very comical looking and reminds me of a Walt Disney character. Very cool picture. TFS Trevor
