[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
Well, as some may have noticed already, my greatest fascination at present are the darters (sympetrum) emerging in one of our small waterholes. I've been up there on several mornings to look for new ones emerging, and as I've by now had the good luck to see several actually slide out of their larvae shells, I'm beginning to get the hang of the procedure. This particular one I managed to photograph all through from the first tiny rift in the larvae shell and until he had rested and took the turn to get his head upwards.
Looking through the sequence of photos this one struck me as particularly interesting because it shows clearly both sets of eyes, the greyish-brown larvae eyes on the side of the head (which will disappear entirely within a short while during the transformation) and the yellowish-brown pads (looking slightly like the remedies for a breast enlargement from this angle ;-)) that will eventually expand and form the eyes of the grown-up darter. You can still see the now empty bubble where the larvae eye used to fit into the larvae shell.
I have no clue whatsoever at which point during the transformation that the vision is transferred from the larvae eyes to the new ones, or whether the darter does actually at some stage have "double vision", that is, whether it is able to see with all four eyes at the same time.
Treatment: Crop, saturation +10, USM and resize.

Ready for the Mardi Gras? Another nice one, Bente. AS for the eyes, I think it is as for snakes shedding their skins - the eye-cap is also sheadded and that is one reason they are so irritible. Nice note too.

You tried to take alien in photo, Bente? This is not a beautiful animal but your picture is great! colors, Dof and composition are perfect! Bravo!

Lovely detail shot! I must admit I didn't realise that they had two sets of eyes during their lifecycle, so that came as some of an eye-opener (if you'll pardon the pun)! I suppose it should have been obvious looking at the larvae and then the adults, but I'd never really thought about it before... Technically good, although I'd probably have liked a little more DOF, but I realise that's a tradeoff with flash power and background balance. Maybe more flash power, diffused a bit more? Anyway, I like and thanks for the informative note :-D

Very nice bente all shinney and new, very well controled a image of oposits light and dark, beause the emerging dragon fly is so white and shiney with body fluids to help it out of the shell.
good explination of what you where atemping to atchieve and observing, and poses a good question that somebody might know the answer, I certainly do not, Ive never seen a picture of this stage so clearly. Thank you

An amazing close-up, Bente, I don't recall ever having seen the like of it. Wonderful details and clarity, and perfect title to summarize the stage of the transformation that we are seeing here. Very good notes, too.

Another cracking shot of the birth - just like the one on TE but this time with a very special effect caused by the angle and the dark surroundings and of course the fact that he has not come out of the larvaskin yet. Looks like he is sitting in a backsack - like an indian baby;-).
