Many thanks to all of you who welcomed me so warmly to this forum and liked my first shot posted here! Now I present to you a pair of the small skippers Thymelicus lineola in copula among tall grass. This photo is one of my personal favourites. Taking the shot was difficult, as there was slight wind swinging the flowerhead from side to side; what is not seen here is my left hand holding the grass stem in place, so that the photo was shot single-handed. In-camera image stabilization really helps!

This skipper is a widespread and common species across most of Europe and in the south and central parts of the continent care should be taken with its identification as confusion is possible with the similar and also common species Thymelicus sylvestris. Good identification marker is the underside of the antennal club (black in lineola, yellow in sylvestris) as well as the shape of the black androconial patch (sex brand) on the upper forewing of males ("!"-shaped in lineola, "|"-shaped in sylvestris). Thankfully, identification in Finland, where this photo was taken, is straighforward as only lineola occurs here. Though I am not sure Finnish lepidopterists see it that way ;-)...

Hi Zdravko, this is indeed a lovely shot of these Skippers. Your exposure was obviously very good as you caught great light and colour on the Skippers and the flower head. I love the way they are facing in opposite directtions. Your POV and DOF is perfect. Sharpness pristine. Hope to see more. Sorry I missed your first post.
