Erebia ligea

Family: Satyridae
Flight Time: July - August
Size: 48-54mm
Altitude: 0-1800m

This is one of the largest of the Erebias. It is boldly marked. Distinctive features are the checkered fringes and on the bold white discal marks on the underside. It is widespread from the Alps and eastwards and in Scandinavia. Generally it is found at moderate altitudes but it also spreads to much lower altitudes than most other Erebias.

It is an easy butterfly to identify. The size and richness of colour are the first sign - this is a large, strong Erebia. Then the chequered fringe and the clear white flash on the underside are give-aways. The only thing with which it could be confused is the Large Ringlet, Erebia euryale. This latter species usually has blind eyespots (though there are forms in which the eyespots have pupils) and a less distinct white flash; it is also, surprisingly, a little smaller.

Also known as the Arran Brown, named after the Isle of Arran, where they have reputedly been caught in the past, together with locations in Scotland. No modern evidence exists of any colonies in Scotland.

This image has been cropped, resized and sharpened for TN.

Hello Alan,
an excellent capture of Erebia ligea. I think the light is optimal.
The structures and colours of the dark wing surfaces are nicely reproduced.
Depth of field is optimal in combination with the selected point of view and precise focus.
As a result, the specimen stands out clearly.
Best wishes, Peter

Hi Alan

Good shot of the Arran Brown, a species I've not seen before.

Hello Alan,
This is not an easy butterfly species to photograph as well as this: I Arran Browns only on odd years as they have a two-year larval development and when I do my chances of getting an open wing capture with total sharpness and good exposure like this are minimal.
Well done and thanks for sharing this delight,
