Ammophila as a slim silhouette and a very fine waist, with an orange or red band on the abdomen.

It nourishes with nectar of flower, like here.

It is a very remarkable insect.

Peaceful in its practices, it becomes a murderer for its progeny.

First of all, it digs a burrow of approximately 5cm of depth, with a room at its end.
If it did not finish when the sun lies down, it closes it with a small stone until the following morning, and there returns without mistake.

Then, it leaves in hunting; it seeks a night caterpillar of nocturnal butterfly, fat enough to nourish its larva.

It’s prey found, it very precisely paralyses it by pricking it with its dart in the nerve centres. Thus, it still lives and will act as meat safe for its descendants.

It transports this prey which can weigh fifteen times its weight to the burrow, installs there and lay its egg.

With the blossoming, the larva starts to devour its victim, while finishing by the vital bodies. It transforms itself then, and the winter passes to the shelter.

At spring, an new ammophila leaves ground and takes off.

P.S.: I know my english isn't so good. Please help me by correct my note, thanks.

Hi Sebastien, I'm very impressed by this. The colours are beautiful and the composition is strong as it always is in your pictures. I'm impressed that you managed to get most if it sharp and in focus becuase, only when you have tried to get a picture of wasps like this then do you realise how diffuclt these ever-twitching insects are to capture. Excellent.

Absolutely incredible!! Great compo, sharpness, detaile and lighting. Excellent work!!!

voila une photo a la hauteur du mot "macro" !
tres belle capture, la presentation est tres bien faite.
good job.

Excellent Sebastien. Noce POV and DOF where it counts. Well done.

I must admit that althogh the close up lense seems to reduce the DOF, the part focused is just amazing.
You managed really well with the blacks, and the composition is lovely.
Very detailed potrait.

A great shot.
Excellent composition and colours.
Nice detail and a good note.
very well done.

Sebastian, I agree with everything Paul has stated. Just today I wrangled with two different "Vespids" and they are constantly moving, making a clean capture very difficult. Great job here!!

This is a very interesting contribution with an insect not often seen here. You've choosen the difficult way by shooting in the lenght, because this has reduced the sharp sections. Nevertheless, it's globally very good, and the focus point on the center equilibrates both fore and aft parts. Colors are wonderful and the flower (I guess a thistle) adds a very nice tone to it. Une très belle photo, Sébastien, digne d'une illustration sur l'espèce.

Nice smooth image, personally I would have preferred the head sharper, but at this level the slightest twitch throws the focus out.

An excellent capture, and interesting notes to accompany it.Great stuff.

Great shot, perfect colors, very sharp.
Straight in my favorites
Well done

Perfect picture, pity that head is little unsharp. I've hunted for this insect all summer but without luck. You did great job!

'Remarkable' describes both the insect and your photo perfectly, Sebastien. Incredible detail. I like how the smooth curved surface of its head contrasts with its hairy body. Excellent DOF, giving such a rich green background. Well done.
