hello All

this is my first butterfly of this year, and it is also the 3th that i have seen, the two others was yellows one, i think Brimstones, they was flying far over my head and impossible to capture them, this one was a quite docile modele, it was landing just before my feet, i have taken a few photos

The European Peacock (Inachis io), more commonly known simply as the Peacock butterfly, is a colourful butterfly, found in Europe, temperate Asia as far east as Japan. It is the only member of the genus Inachis (the name is derived from Greek mythology, meaning Io, [the daughter] of Inachus). It should not be confused or classified with the "American peacocks" in the genus Anartia; these are not close relatives of the present species. The Peacock butterfly is resident in much of its range, often wintering in buildings or trees. It therefore often appears quite early in spring. The Peacock butterfly has figured in research where the role of eye-spots as anti-predator mechanism has been investigated.
In the British Isles, the butterfly is found in England, Scotland, Wales, Ireland, Shetland islands and the Orkneys. The Peacock is expanding its range.The butterfly is not known to be threatened.

Characteristics

The butterfly has a wingspan of 50 to 55 mm. The base-colour of the wings is a rusty red, and at each wingtip it bears a distinctive, black, blue and yellow eye-spot. The underside is a cryptically coloured dark-brown or black.

Natural history

The Peacock can be found in woods, fields, meadows, pastures, parks, and gardens, and from lowlands up to 2,500 metres (8,200 ft) elevation. It is a relatively common butterfly seen in many European parks and gardens. The Peacock male exhibits territorial behaviour, in many cases territories being selected en route of the females to oviposition sites.

The butterfly hibernates over winter before laying its eggs in early spring, in batches of up to 400 at a time. The eggs are ribbed and olive-green in colour and laid on the upper parts, and, the undersides of leaves of nettle plants and hops. The caterpillars, which are shiny black with six rows of barbed spikes and a series of white dots on each segment, and which have a shiny black head, hatch after about a week.

The Chrysalis may be either grey, brown or green in colour and may have a blackish tinge. The caterpillars grow up to 42 mm in length.
The recorded foodplants of the European Peacock are Stinging Nettle (Urtica dioica), Hop (Humulus lupulus) and the Small Nettle (Urtica urens).

The adult butterflies drink nectar from a wide variety of flowering plants, including buddleia, willows, dandelions, wild marjoram, danewort, hemp agrimony, and clover; they also utilize tree sap and rotten fruit.

The butterfly has cryptic undersides with flashy eye-spots above and can also make an audible sound by rubbing its wings together, presumably as anti-predator measures.

I like the POV taken with fine sharpness and natural colours against the gravel BG on which it is sunnning itself. The composition is just right.

I can definitely relate to your excitement at capturing your first butterfly photo of the year. I haven't spotted any yet this year, but I'm sure they will be active fairly soon.

Concerning myself I don't even dare guessing, since this week brought another snowfall sniff sniff...
And to admire butterflies I have to make use of TN for quite a while yet, but no problem since I can enjoy fine photographs like yours!

Hi Jacqueline,it looks like this rather attractive butterfly has eyes for you!I like the colour and eye spots this little creature has and the fact you have it captured with it's wings fully spread.The image has some areas on it that look a little soft on the focus but stopping down a little would be enough to get it in total focus.A fine a very likeable image and thank you very much for sharing it with us.

Hi Jacqueline,
The first butterfly of the year (even if commented much later) is always special for each of us. Your 2011 b-fly debut is wonderful, in both sharpness and colors + also a stunner composition-wise. Except for the small background noise, which may easily be removed with the free software Neat Image, I like the photo as it is. Tfs, and of course congrats.
