An interesting fact about coypus: the udders are on the back (as shown on this pic). This way the little ones can suckle as their mother swims.

On this pic,
- Mum is on the left
- Dad is on the right
- They are four little ones in the center. Two are suckling (left. One is almost completely hidden by the other one), two are lying (right).

They are very cute to look at, although they are know as a pest.
"Le perreux" is in the suburb of Paris. Coypus have become numerous there and some can be approached quite close.
I laid my camera on a fence to stabilize it.

The coypu is a large, crepuscular, semi aquatic rodent native to South America, but now also present in Europe, Asia, Africa, and North America. In most regions the coypu is considered a pest. In Eastern Europe and Central Asia, however, it is still valued for its fur. The coypu, a herbivore, has been introduced from South America to every continent except Australia and Antarctica. The animal is adapted to subtropical to mild temperate climates.
Efforts (hunting, trapping, poisoning) to stop the development of Coypu's in France were vain. Interesting to note: in South America, its native place, he's not doing so well, as he has many predators there, including pumas, jaguars, anacondas and caimans.

Hi JeanMarie,
An excellent shot on this family of Nutria. I never knew about the location of the females udders. Very interesting. I have heard they are really becoming a pest. Excellent exposure has rendered nice colors and sharp detail in the fur. Looks good!

Very interesting notes about the coypu, thanks for the tidbit about the udders. In looking at the animals in your photo it strikes me that they look like a cross between a guinea pig, capybara and a muskrat.

Very nice detail and clarity; a well exposed image. Good catch light in 'Mum's' eye.
