Brief description

Medium-sized dragonfly (30 to 45 mm) with broad, flat abdomen. The wings are hyaline, with an amber spot on the basal part of the hind wings.

The entire body and the head of the adults are bright red for the males. The females and the immatures are of fawn colour. The thorax of the females carries a light strip (generally white) in the median position and two left and right, light-coloured lateral bands. Absence of dark spots on the head, thorax and legs.

The characters "amber spots of the hind wings" and "absence of dark spots" conjugated together make it possible to differentiate the genus Crocothemis from the other genera of Libellulidae.

The copy presented here makes it possible to fully appreciate the design of the anterior and posterior wings (see the "Guide to the Dragonflies of France and Europe - Delachaux and Niestlé editor for the precise description of the wings of dragonflies). Note, in particular, the additional radial, surmounted by a row of cells, as well as the enlarged discoidal field of the anterior wing. Presence of a pterostigma of fawn colour in the anterior side part of each of the four wings. Note also the presence of an amber spot in the anterior internal position of each of the two posterior wings.

Take note on the “totem” position of the abdomen on the insect.

This insect is endemic to humid Mediterranean zones, in stagnant waters, mostly brackish (rice fields, pools of water ...). The specimen presented was observed in the Pont de Gau ornithological reserve, where stagnant lagoon waters are very present (as well as many birds).

Hello Philippe,
Although the BG appears quite busy due to where it had landed, the dragonfly itself is flawless. Awesome focus and clarity with beautiful natural color tones. A fine looking specimen perfectly displayed. Great job!!

hello Philippe
une magnifique capture de Libellule, bonne netteté, bon rendu des ailes et de la transparence.
