|During a hot dry summer in the Ardeche, France, I took a number of photo's of this impressive subject. A Violet Carpenter Bee, Xylocopa violacea. The name of the flower is, I think,blue Globe-thistle ??? |

Hi Hendrik, welcome to TN. Good shot to start off with. I like the composition and I'd love to see that bee a bit closer. You can post images of up to 800 pixels which makes viewing easier.
The bee is I am fairly sure is a Violet Carpenter Bee, Xylocopa violacea.

Pretty first double presentation... an insect on a beautiful and showy flower.
The dark bumblebees are always difficult to portray, but here is appraised the spectacular colorful of its wings.
Excellent sharpness with very good composition.

You managed good detail across the board which is difficult to achieve with all the contrasts in this shot.

Awsome detail and color in the flower, the background gives a warm contrast. Composition also good, nicely balanced free space around the subject(s).
