Name : Common Merganser (female) - Scientific name : Mergus merganser - Family : Anatidae.
---
Description : The Common Merganser, (Goosander in Europe), Mergus merganser, is a large sized duck, which is distributed over Europe, North Asia and North America. It is most common on lakes and rivers. Its nests can be found in treeholes.
Males and females are easily distinguished, since the male merganser has a dark green head, while the head of the female is reddish-brown. The Common Merganser is 70 cm long with a 78-94 cm wingspan.
These large fish-eaters have serrated edges to their bills to help them grip their prey. Along with the Smew and the other Mergansers, they are therefore often known as "sawbills". They also eat mussels and shrimps; young birds mainly eat aquatic insects.

Hi Christian.
What an beauty you have pictured and done this perfectly. Transperency of your shot, clearness of the colours, sharpness and details of the bird and water surface are simply fantastic. We can see the smallest details of the bird, its funny "hair" on the head and even water drops on its plumage. Micro waves in front of the bird and surround of it are amazing too. Composition, lighting and delicate colour palette are really outstanding. Bravo and best regards. TFS,
Alexei.

Hi Christian

Very nice too see you back and posting, my friend!
Even if you don't have much time now, whenever you drop by it's a pleasure for us too see you work and read your interesting comments. Thank you!

This is another splendid photo of this interesting and lovely bird. The common merganser is not something we see very often here on TN, so thatnks for sharing.
The POV and details on this one are excellent and the colors are lovely. Very good contrast with the water, too and very nice too see a part of the speeding feet underwater, too...something very rare in these types of photos.

All the best to you!
Horia

Oh, I remember this PUNK bird! She's a real cute looking fellow Taz. Lovely capture and so good to see you posting again.

"Annecy of NZ" has another crew member - baby girl was born this week and we're busy looking after the older child. She's a little darling and I bet they'll try and take her out on Annecy within a week.
Best regards to you my friend
Janice

Bonjour Christian,
Bravo!

Hello Christian, this is a lovely clear and sharp shot of the Merganser. I have not yet seen one in the UK, though I believe they do visit here. I love the plumage which is shown in great detail with rich colours. Great light throughout, the water shimmer is wonderful.
