English name : Crab spider – Scientific name : Xysticus cristatus. family : Thomisidae
Description : Size: The female grows to a length of around 8mm. The male is a little smaller growing to around 5mm.
Months seen : March to August. Habitat : low growing vegetation. Often on the ground. Food : insects.
Special features : as the name suggests, they sometimes move in a crab-like way, from side to side.
They hunt their prey by jumping on unsuspecting victims. When the prey is big, the spider manage to sink her fangs into the back of the insect neck and inject it with her paralysing poison.
The male has an unusual method of mating with the female. First he grabs hold of one of her legs, and waits until she stops struggling. He then ties her down to the ground with threads of silk. Finally he crawls underneath her to mate.
Technique : FUJIFILM FinePix S6500 - Mode P - Auto focus - Aperture f5.6 - Shutter speed 1/250s - Iso 100 - Flash not fired - focal 100mm equiv. - File JPG fine - Handheld.
Photo : taken in the field in front of my house. With harsh sunlight and few wind... I caught the full flower but I prefered to crop to see better the spider, resized and framed in 800x600 for TN, no other modification...
Did you see the little visitor on the top ;-)

bonjour Christian,

Wonderful capture Christian, the subject is very well composed and despite the harsh light the exposure and details is well preserved. The little bug on the edge of leaf is a nice bonus. Very well done, good note..

Grande harmonie de couleurs, une belle "composition" avec le sujet décentré et une grande netteté créent une image naturelle et belle. Bravo. Je te souhaite aussi un bon et prompt rétablissement.

Hi Christian

Very sorry to hear about your condition :(( I really hope you get well soon!!!

This is a magnificent capture! Both aestetic and very sharp and great in terms of biological features of the subjects.
The spider is presented with excellent details and colors, just like the flower.
I really like your POV on this one and also the impeccable exposure management, especialyl if you say that it was a harsh sunlight.
The "little visitor on the top" is a terrific add-on to the entire very beautiful composition!

Bravo and TFS

Hello Christian!

Hi Taz my friend from Annecy. I am sorry to hear that you haven't been well - I hope you are feeling much better now.
This is a very good photo - the flower and spider are very clear to see, and even the little bug on the top of the flower is too.
Well done mon ami,

Bonjour Christian,
Très beau rendu des détails, notammment sur l'inflorescence et un beau cadrage qui laisse respirer la droite de l'image tout en mettant à l'honneur la pauvre bestione bien inconsciente...

Hi Christian,
Fantastic clarity on this one. I like the composition and presentation very much.

A Comeback shot after the sickness so powerful ..:)..
Supershot Christian, with excellent PoV.I guess u also retained that tiny guy hiding up there behind the leaf purposely.
Fantastic composition.Into my favorites...
TFS & Cheers

Hola Christian.
Unos detalles y una nitidez fabulosos.
Perfecto encuadre en esta agradable escena "campestre"
Un saludo, JL.

Me encanta. En general los arácnidos, por su forma y tamaño son difíciles a veces para la foto, aunque tú esta vez has metido la Xysticus y la planta entera sin perder foco ... bravo!
Los colores vivos e impactantes y composición correcta. Una bonita foto.

I love surprises when watching my captures at home, I am sure you did not notice the "intruder" until you saw it in your screen :)))
Nice colour saturation and composition in this one, the visitor is definately a nice bonus ;)
Thanks and regards.
