Pisaura mirabilis (Clerck, 1757)

Classification:
Reign: Animalia
Phylum: Arthropoda
Class: Arachnida
Order: Araneae
Family: Pisauridae

Noms communs:
French: Pisaure admirable, Pisaure étonnante.
English: Nurseryweb spider.

I will not extend on the characteristics from this hunter spider, see the very beautiful shots of Paul, well documented.
They are grouped in this theme made for all pisauridaes.

However, the coupling behavior of the members of this family will always astonish me :

Perhaps you know it, the Arachnidas loves often finish very badly, and the male is often used as proteins contribution for eggs after the coupling... Here, the knight offers a engagement gift of to his promised : a lovingly silkpacked prey.
The female, all with its meal, do not pay any more attention to her future husband, which can then fertilize her without risk.
After the laying, she transports her eggs under its body, in a silk cocoon.
Its the only time she weaves a web (don't gorget her name : nurseryweb spider) which will be used to him as a crib.

Because she doesn't eat while she takes care of her smalls, pisaura often dies before the last leave the maternal web.
The dolomede, cousin of the same family, survives most of the time, and can then lay second once.

This photograph, like the preceding one, comes from my first "macro" trek of the year.
The insufficient lighting conditions have constrained me to use a too large opening, this reducing the depth of field.

In spite, I hope that it will be on your taste.

It's fantastic Sebastien, very well done. I love the shallower DOF here and it really brings the attention to the face and eyes. Excellent work, thanks for posting.

Sebastian, Yes! I just got it this week. I'm waiting for a Sigma ring flash unit that should help me utilize its potential..
This is an excellent face-shot with a bold compostion that works well IMO. Very good sharpness & detail within your DOF. Well done!

Wow Sebastien, this face is very good. Not my favourite insect but I can see it's face so clearly. Well done.

Great shot, of this spider. As Paul said the shallow DOF is impressive and places the focus just on the facial features. Very sharp there. Great shot, Sebastien.

Hi Sebastien
Sorry, it tkes me lately three days to work through an answering critique, A lovely beasty, the eyes are exceptional, nice note too, loke the fading body with the bright face, TFS.

Great macro on this spider. I like the shallow DOF that keeps you focused on his eyes. Nice Job!

Very good shot Sebastien. I loved the shallow DoF which takes all attention to the head and eyes. The plants in the front is a bit dividing the interest but not so bad.
Thanks for sharing.

Excellent macro Sebastien! I missed this before. Extremely well done, no nits whatsoever! TFS!

Bravo

Amicalement,

Vincent

Hi Sebastien, I like the shallow DOF as it enhances the face and eyes of this wonderfull creature. Focus on the face perfect and lighting and composition well done. Keep shootin!!
