We have a super-abundance of Mourning and White Winged Doves in Tucson but I have never seen a pigeon here. This one is in a hole in a tree which I found interesting although it might be common - I don't know.

The Rock Pigeon has a restricted natural resident range in western and southern Europe, North Africa, and into South Asia. Its habitat is natural cliffs, usually on coasts. Its domesticated form, the feral pigeon, has been widely introduced elsewhere, and is common, especially in cities, over much of the world.

The Rock Pigeon is 32–37 cm long with a 64–72 cm wingspan. The white lower back of the pure Rock Pigeon is its best identification character, but the two black bars on its pale grey wings are also distinctive. The tail is margined with white. It is strong and quick on the wing, dashing out from sea caves, flying low over the water, its lighter grey rump showing well from above.

The head and neck of the mature bird are a darker blue-grey than the back and wings; the lower back is white. The green and lilac or purple patch on the side of the neck is larger than that of the Stock Dove, and the tail is more distinctly banded. Young birds show little lustre and are duller. Eye colour of the pigeon is generally an orange colour but a few pigeons may have white-grey eyes. The eyelids are orange in colour and are encapsulated in a grey-white eye ring. The feet are red to pink.

Hello Jane ! I was sure that only bikinis were to be seen in St-Tropez !:-) Well done on the Pigeon with its natural frame and good colors ! Thanks !

Mario

A beautiful composition - love the curves.
And the purple glisten in the feathers is awesome.

Les pigeons dans Etats-Unis sont abondants. Trop. Les gens se plaignent. Si nous avions su que vous aimez que les et a aucun.. nous vous enverrions quelques-uns : -)

A nicely self framed picture of what is apparently unusual in your area.
Bob

Hello Jane
Just a Pigeon?...I think not!! In the UK the pigeon is classed as vermin such as a rat would be..but they really are a very beautiful bird..The focus on the Pigeon is a little unsharp as I guess you Auto Focused and thats why the tree is pin sharp..Still its great to see a Pigeon that to you is rare.
TFS and Best Regards
Paul

Hello jane,
Nice natural framing by the plain tree for this portrait of a feral dove. I also like the pose and the way the feathers iridesce in this light.
Unusual shot of the 'town pigeon'

Very nice framing! I didn't know they were unusual. It's funny how we get used to what we live with and assume that the rest of the world has the same eyes and views
Great capture
