Weather is awful in France - rain, grey sky, cold... No real picture opportunity so far, it's a bit boring, so I'm going through my archives again, looking for old pics I hadn't posted yet.

These cute bats are coming each summer to my gand-mother's house. They are hangng under the roof during the day, and during the night they come out to hunt all the mosquitos and insects that are flying around the river which borders my grand-mother's garden. When I was a child and slept there, I loved to watch them, and sometimes I woke up in the morning with a bat hanging head down in my curtain, so close and so fast asleep I could have touched it - speaking of this brings back a lot of happy memories ! :-)

To take this picture, I had to climb under the roof on a hot summer afternoon - it was like entering an oven - and then I had to crawl to the place where the bat were hanging. It was completely dark. I was very close, and they woke up with the flash, getting nervous and starting to squeak, so I took only some pictures then I left them in peace again.

Some people might say bat are ugly or frightening animals, but I do really love them - are they note beautiful, with their cute faces and furry bodies ?

Once, a specialist came to my grand-mother's house and he counted five different species under her roof. But thanks to Ahmet, I know now that they are "Myotis blythii", the Lesser Mouse-eared Bat - a species of vesper bat in the Vespertilionidae family.

Bats are mammals in the order Chiroptera. The forelimbs of all bats are developed as wings, making them the only mammals naturally capable of sustained flight (other mammals, such as flying squirrels, gliding possums orcolugos, can only glide for limited distances). The word Chiroptera comes from the Greek words cheir "hand" and pteron "wing," as the structure of the open wing is very similar to an outspread human hand with a membrane between the fingers that also stretches between hand and body.

A measure of the success of bats is their estimated total of about 1,100 species worldwide, accounting for about 20 percent of all mammal species. About 70 percent of bats are insectivores. Most of the rest are frugivores, with a few species being carnivorous. Bats are present throughout most of the world. Bats perform a vital ecological role by pollinating flowers, and also serve an important role in seed dispersal. Many tropical plants are entirely dependent on bats.

Hello Valerie, this is one of the best bat shot which i have seen up to now. Beutiful faces and realy cute. i love the pose so much. Thanks for sharing this.

Vielen Dank! Herzliche Grüßen,

Hello Valerie
I am very glad to see a post for chauves-souris for a long time (on TN). they are my favourite animals. I also add this post to the Theme Bats (Chiroptera). You can see some others.
Well, your capture wonderful, with superb sharp focus, POV/OOF, eyes contact and composition. using flash, lighting and colors also wonderful.
As for their species, they are not Pipistrellus pipistrellus. They must be Myotis blythii - Lesser Mouse-Eared Bat / Petit murin. thanks for sharing this beauty. best wishes

Hi Valerie,

Ciao Valerie,

Merci et félicitations

Hello Valerie,
I've only ever seen bats a couple of times, but I also think they are wonderful creatures.
They certainly beat humans to using sonar technology.
This is an excellent close up photo of them.
Very well done.

Hello Valérie,
A nice close-up of a couple of roosting bats with two others close to. The POV and composition are excellent and the flash has allowed fine details and colours to enable our bat expert, Ahmet ID them as Lesser Mouse-eared.
A nice one from your archives and thanks for sharing it.
Let us hope for good photography weather soon!
Best regards,

A cute pair indeed, cuddled together probably for warmth Valerie, captured expertly in fine colour and structural details, also in sharp focus through your flash illumination. Very good job my friend.

Hi Valérie!

You present us a superb wildlife picture. First, I love the title every much, it's surprising to see that someone calls bats cute. Indeed, in the way you present them, they are cute. The composition and the pose of the bats highlights this impression at best. I also like the unity of the colour tones very much.

Kind regards

ciao Valerie!
so vivid portrait of bats ,captured with
perfect details and natural color

compliments sERGIO

Hi Valerie,

woe, what a nice portrait of these Bats.
Good details and beautiful colours.

All creatures that inhabit the earth are the creation of Nature and part of the scheme that Nature has, Valerie.
In the course of our evolution, we human beings have maligned quite a few of them through our blind beliefs and superstitions. Bats are the victims of such beliefs.
In your picture, they look so cute and innocent. Look at their features and colours too -- who can call them ugly?
You have taken a very graphic and well controlled picture of this group, using flash light.
Well done and TFS.

Ahhh... Valerie:) what beuties. You captured these cute pair expertly MF! i share with Greg's opinion and absolutely you are special girl:) that you love my snakes and lizards:) But i have to admit that i am afraid much from bats:) Because they remind me Dracula's legends:) i know that they insectivor animals (though a species from S America-i forgot its exact name now:)- a real blood-sucker).
Anyway, a beautiful shot.. very sharp and the colours are vivid.. well done..
Cheers MF!

Superb picture VAlérie, no wonder you love nature, having a grandmother living with bats so close, and close to a river! Your picture is perfect, the light is superb, perfectly lit, not underexposed neither overexposed. With a flash, for me, it's not that easy. I also like very much the proximity you chose to be, so close to them. We also have bats here, at dusk they come out and fly over our heads, catching insects very swiftly. But I haven't seen any in the barn so they probably hang around somewhere else than in the garden. Thanks for such a fine image,

Salut Eric

Dear Val,
Beautiful pic, perfect bat portrait, which brings back some nice memories of Your childhood. I surely shouldn't touch them - not because I have any problems with bats, but their mouth is full of infective agents. Guaranteed virus infection if they bite You (rabies, for example. Not rare after bat bites - fortunately bat bites themselves are very rare). But the photograph is excellent, as said above, either You touched the bats in the past or not. Congrats and tfs.
Best regards from Hungary, László
