[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
Here another one from my day with Dagonflies and Damselflies. Not as good as the previoux picture, because here the head is out of focus, but I really like these insects, they are big, impressive and so beautiful, so I thought it was worth posting even if not perfect.

This huge Dragonfly is a male Broad-bodied Chaser (I suppose, but I'm not 100 % sure), a European Dragonfly with a wingspan of approximately 70 mm. But this one was bigger. The males have a blue broad bodies with dark patches on the wings, and the females are yellow/light brown.

I found them near the lake of Jaegerthal - there is the lake in itself, and then, at the end of the lake, a vast area of marshes and mud, full of reeds and different water plants. I saw at least a dozen of these Dragonflies, flying over the water, sometimes so close that I thought they would fly into me. I saw some couples mating in flight, and I even saw a female laying her eggs (and I was stupid enough to miss all the pictures of this event).

They were easy models, as they were sitting nicely on banches sticking out of the water. They flew away when I came too close, but I just had to wait some minutes and they came back at exactly the same place, so it was quite easy.

I post two pictures in WS, the first showing the under-side of a male, completely brown, completely different - at first I had thought it was another species. And the second picture is a poor attempt on in-flight capture, but at least you can see the colors of the female. She was hovering at 20 cm over the water, and every second she went down on the water to lay an egg. It lasted several minutes, it was very interesting to watch.

Bonjour Valerie!

Agree with your ID - this is Libellula depressa in very characteristic pose. I also like these big dragonflies - they look great and are quite polite models. OOF head isn't very distracting here, I like detailed wings and beautifull, clear composition - dragonfly looks like floating in green space. Very good work my friend!

Hello Valérie,
A fine shot of a male Libellula depressa taken from a good dorsal POV with mostly excellent sharpness against a great OOF natural BG. These have just started to fly here now but they have not become blue yet.
I like the WS shots too.
Thanks and best regards,

Wonderful species, wonderful shot!
Congrats Valerie!

Ciao Valerie, beautiful POV for a fantastic dragonfly, splendid details and superb sharpness, wonderful colors and beautiful blurry BG, very well done, ciao Silvio

Bonsoir Valerie !
Un rendement exceptionnel!
Une magnifique macro avec un merveilleux joueur.
Une belle soirée,

Hi Valerie, amazingly delightful macro of a male Broad-bodied Chaser from an unusual but great POV with great clarity and fine OFF green BG.
TFS and cheers,

Witaj Valerie!
Most beautiful conception.. You presented dragon-fly very nicely. I know from naturalists, with such formaldehyde it is good to dragon-fly's identification. You have sharpness very good. Splendid colours and excellent background.
Pozdrawiam - Roma

Hi Valerie

Even if the head isn't in perfect focus, i still think this is a lovely shot of this bread-bodied chaser and, as Greg said, in its typical pose.
The exposure on these males can be very tricky - due to their bright abdomen - but you managed it well here. The result is some very beautiful colors everywhere, including that gorgeous BG.
One should also consider that you took this shot with a non-macro lens and therefore your control was somewhat limited. Even more so, i think your shot is great and i congratulate you for it.

Bravo and TFS

You certainly had a great day for shooting insects, Valerie.
This is yet another powerful capture of a dragonfly native to Europe. It looks so sturdy and young.
The picture is needle sharp and the details on the wings and abdomen are really outstanding.
TFS and all the best.

Bravo!
