Hello my friends ! I have been absent for TN during some days, but I am back now. I have been working in the fields during 4 days to help my grand-father, we have been cutting grass, then we let it dry in the sun, and now we have food for the animals when winter comes. We have tractors and machines, but the work is always better done by human hand, so we still had a lot of work. That was 4 very tiring days (I was too tired even to go on my computer in the evening) and I'm glad it's over, but on the other hand it is part of living in the countryside and I wouldn't want to give up on it.

It was also a great period to watch animals - I have seen a good dozen of Slow Worms (Anguis fragilis), many birds and among them a gorgeous Jay, so many butterflies of all species that I stoped counting before the end of the first day, and more than anything else - lizards.

At the house of my grand-parents, were we have been working, it is always full of lizards, as soon as the weather gets warmer. Mostly, they belong to the species "Podarcis muralis", like on this picture. They are everywhere - on the walls, on the ground, in the grass, on the road, in the tiny cracks between two stones... They are so agile, and so hard to capture, but they are really fantastic animals. Each summer, I love to watch them.

This is why I have chosen to post a picture of lizards, today. It is an old picture from 2006, at my very beginnings with the Canon 350D. Quality is not the best (I had little practise at the time) but it shows an interesting scene, I think. Never had I seen so many lizards together, basking in the hot afternoon sun and cuddled up so close that they were walking on each other. It was very interesting to watch. We can also see how efficient their camouflage is, usually when they do not move it is very hard to see them on the stones.

So please excuse me if I didn't answer your comments during the last days, and excuse the poor quality of the picture - and I hope you'll appreciate my lizards!!!

Hello Valerie,
I saw just the same, or a very similar, lizard two days ago in the Italian Alps. I have a picture or two so will post this when I run out of butterflies. Your image does indeed give a good idea of their communal behaviour, although it lacks the depth of field required to show all the lizards clearly. Thanks for the ID, too.
Alan

Bonsoir

Hi Valerie,
I know very well how tiring working on a farm can be.
A few years ago I lived and worked on a farm where everything was done the 'old fashioned'way
(We did use a tractor and baler for haymaking though)
You definitely need a cold beer at the end of the day :)
A great shot of this group of lizards.
I have never seen so many together in one place before.
TFS
Steve

Francine

Don't they look more like Skinks, Valerie?
Well, I'm no authority on reptiles, so don't take me seriously.
One thing is certain; you were a talented photographer even in 2006, as is evidenced in this archive shot.
The congregation of these creatures has been well captured and they don't seem to be aware that they are getting immortalized through the camera work of Val :).
I'm happy to know you did some real serious agricultural work like I used to do when I was young and lived in my village in the hills years ago.
Thanks and all the best.

Hello Valérie,
An amazing capture!
I have never seen so many lizards together and this shot shows these basking Wall Lizards from a great POV, sharpness and DOF. Though you say this was at the start of your photography hobby, it is of excellent quality in my opinion.
Thanks and best regards,
Ivan

Bonjour Valérie,
Are very good sun ...
Very good capture.Excellent sharpness.
Best regards,

Valerie,
This image, in reality, is quite good considering that at that time you were sort of "learning" about this our beloved hobby.
The ISO rating in the sunshine is a bit high. That's why you lost its "clarity" a bit. No contrasts. The "white" frame is not enhancing this lovely subject.
Am going to try out a W/S.
Thanks for sharing not only the image but a part of your life with your grandfather.
Very warm regards,
Mario.

Hi Valerie
I've never seen so many lizards in one place, this image is really special because of this. We on have one lizard in Alberta, a horned Lizard which is very rare to see. These little guys are really interesting looking and it's great to see them in their natural habitat.
TFS Janice
