Origin and location:

France (Basses-Pyrénées, Charente-Inférieure, Hérault, Gard, Ardèche, Var, Drôme, Isère, Haute Savoie) ; Alsace, Corse ; Europe centrale et méridionale ; Asie mineure.

Sandy places, wet, calcareous, silty or clayey. Plante pioneered the banks of old rivers and gravel pits and, frequently, periodically wet areas (as was the case for the sample).

Description générale:

It is a herbaceous annual or biennial high of thirty to fifty centimeters, sometimes more.

The root is a taproot.

The stem is more or less flexible, slightly woody. It does not have hair. It is green, glaucous.

The leaves are simple, opposite and partially fused at their insertion point on the stem, as shown in the photograph.

The inflorescences are Cymes dichotomous closed, not compact, low-branching. The flowers are carried by relatively elongated peduncles.

The flowers are bright yellow. The calyx consists of six to ten divisions, the sepals often long and narrow may be beyond the corolla. The calyx is persistent. The petals constituting the corolla are coalescent on all or part of their length. The corolla looks like a wheel, with a short tube, globose, six to ten lobes circumvented in the button. It has eight stamens, inserted on the corolla tube, protruding with anthers straight. The stamens are inserted facing to the sepals (and thus between the divisions of the corolla). The ovaries are free, placed at the bottom of the calyx and the corolla. The style is quite short, non persistent, with a bifid stigma. The fruit is a capsule oval.

Pollination is entomophilous or autogamous. Sex is hermaphrodite, protandre. The fruit is a capsule. The spread of seeds is provided by gravity, near the mother plants.

Uses and characteristics

Like most plants of this family, it has fébriguges and tonic properties. The seeds are supposed to contain a neighbor of the poison strychnine
