hello all
i have not new butterfly from this year, i have not to many time to go out with my camera, and also the weather is not good, rainy and windy days and cold temperatures, insectes and butterflies are very rare, and not one damselfly or dragonfly in sight, but i have found this black bug in the forest not far from a lake when i was out with my parents

Geotrupes stercorarius

eng : Dor Beetle
fra : Geotrupe du fumier

The name is also :
June bug, dorr, dorbeetle, dorrbeetle, dorbug, dorrfly, and buzzard clock.

Geotrupes stercorarius is a species of earth-boring dung beetle.

The beetle is up to 2.5 cm (1 in) long. The whole beetle is weakly lustrous and darkly colored, sometimes with a bluish sheen. The body shape is very compact and arched toward the top. On each elytron seven long rows of points are just visible. The head is clearly forward, and similar to a shovel in shape. The antennae are short and thicken into fans at the ends. On each leg there are numerous spikes.

The beetle is widely distributed in Europe. However, the population of the species is clearly falling.

The beetle is coprophagous, feeding on the droppings of herbivorous animals, and thus is found wherever cattle are kept. In the evenings, one can observe them closely circle around the animals on the ground. They create a chirping sound with their hind legs. In the spring, a male and female dig a passage in the earth under a heap of dung, which can be up to 50 cm (20 in) in length. From this the female digs side passages. Into each of these a piece of dung is brought, and an egg is laid. Afterwards, the chamber is closed off with more dung. The larvae which hatch from the eggs feed on the dung for a year, and then pupate. The adult beetles emerge from the pupae.

Hello Jacqueline,
A great shot of this little June Bug who has shown up on this cold and windy day just for you. The detail is great and the DOF give us a close look at the entire insect with sharp focus. The exposure is just right and the colors are very natural.
Sometimes we have to just shoot what is available, so this is just fine for this time of the season. I always have a hard time figuring out what to post when winter is just leaving and spring isn't quite here yet. The insects haven't emerged yet and everything is dull gray and brown in the woods.
Ron

Remarkably sharp picture of this black coloured Beetle, Jacqueline.
The POV gives a perfect impression about each limb of this insect.
The colour tones are very natural.
Well done and TFS.

Hi Jacqueline,
thanks for liking my rafflesia shot.
This beetle is very well captured with the clarity especially on the hairs and thorns on the legs.
The soft blurry ground gives a good contrast to this dark and shiny beetle.
Nice diagonal positioning too.

Regards,
Foozi

Bonjour Jacqueline,

Hello Jacqueline,
You have done superbly here getting such great details in this black beetle, not an easy task.
Merci Jacqueline.

Bonjour Jacqueline,

Ah!

Michel

Jacquilne,
GREAT PIECE OF PHOTOGRAPHY WORK.
Liked your notes too.
About 3 weeks ago I too registered a couple "mating". Not as superb as this one. But I shall post it sometime in May, i hope.
Am old and tired... cannot be on the computer more than 20 minutes per day. That's why I take so long to answer to all my friends.
Best regards to you & your daughter,
Mario.

Hi Jacqueline,

Very well done macro! The details and colour of the beetle are first rate. I can even see the little hairs around its head and the fine details of its antennae and legs. You mentioned that one of its names is June Bug. I remember those bugs very well. I lived for two years in Lorraine, when I was very young. In the spring, the June Bugs would come out when it started to get dark, and they were everywhere -- especially, where there were light sources. That was an interesting experience. TFS.

Regards,
John

Hello Jacqueline,
Black, or almost black beetles are difficult to photograph well. But you have captured this Dor Beetle from a great dorsal POV to show its features with excellent sharpness and a fine blue tinge of colour. The composition on the sandy soil is perfect.
Thanks and have a good weekend,
Ivan

Hello Jacqueline. I finished and returned from my military employment:) hope you are well. This is fine makro of a beetle.
