The family is a family Cicadidae insects of the order Homoptera and are hétérométaboles insects (only the last metamorphosis is complete). The name comes from the Greek kiccos (membrane) and teen (singing). This family of grasshoppers
The Cicada Cicada orni is part of the class of insects of the order Homoptera. It is 2 to 5 cm. In its juvenile stage, it reaches 5-8 cm.
His head is blue gray. Her two little black eyes with facets are clearly separated. His legs are hairy and thanks to these hairs, they cling to the branches. Its four wings are long, brown transparent diamond-shaped with veins clearly visible. His body is brown.
Cicadas feed on sap from tree or shrub, with a mouthparts piercing-sucking
The eggs are laid in summer in France, the crown of shrubs and herbs. In late summer or fall of the eggs produce larvae that are burrowing into the soil for several years in general
During the larval period underground, which lasts from 10 months to several years, nutrition is about roots. The front legs are equipped with a structure that allows burrowing digging tunnels. The structure of the abdomen such as urine abundant larvae of cicadas is channeled to the front legs, which will soften the earth.
View of a molting accelerated.
Only during the final year of his life that life begins air of the cicada. The nymph emerges from the ground and attaches to a stem or trunk, or on a stone and started his final molt or "fledging." The cicada is transformed into an insect adult says "perfect", or imago, to breed only during one month and a half.
The cymbalisation is produced in males and for attracting females. When the temperature is sufficiently high (about 25 ° C), the male "singing", or more exactly, it cymbalise. A common mistake is to say that the chirping cicadas as locusts. However, the stridor is produced by rubbing two body parts of an insect (or more generally an arthropod, because tarantulas chirping as example), while the male cicada has a phonatory organ specialist, cymbals, which is located in his abdomen.
The cymbalisation is the result of the deformation of a membrane (a bit like the lid of a can) driven by a muscle. The sound is amplified in a resonance chamber and evacuated through vents. The frequency and modulation of cymbalisation characterize the different varieties of cicadas. The purpose of this cymbalisation is to attract females of the same species.

Ahhhh.. what a great surprise Catherine:) Nice to see you on TN too MF! Welcome! This is an excellent macro of this noisy beauty. I like the diagonal composition here. Very sharp, and the blurred whitish/green BG compliments the cicada nicely.
TFS and have a nice day MF!
Cheers,
Bayram
