The Col de la Vanoise and Lake of cows

I take a beautiful day for a ride on the roads of the Vanoise.

In summary, the Col de la Vanoise: well-known pass because it is one of the channels of communication between Haute Maurienne and Tarentaise. Traces of passage back to-1000 av b.c., and it was widely used by traders from 1550 to 1850. Currently, it is the starting point of the large glacial walks in the Park of la Vanoise (30,000 hikers per year).

Departure from the Fontanettes above Pralognan la Vanoise (1640m), then the Barmettes sanctuary, Lake of cows, Lake circle, Refuge of the Col de la Vanoise (2515m) and drops on Pralognan by plates Lake, turning around the needle of the Vanoise.
Indicated time: mounted 3 h (+ 875 m)
descent 3 h

Departure is located in the Fontannettes, small hamlet perched above Pralognan, 1644m of altitude. I have the idea to go see what this can offer the winter, especially at the level of the Virgin slope, but also to assess the evolution of the case-sensitive great glacier, using photographs taken by my uncle at the same time last year.
The trail starts in the lifts of the Fontannettes, and then swings to the right. This fact trail party GR 55, it is therefore very well arrow. Ascension continues without difficulty in the woods of the Glière, and leads to the refuge of Barmettes (alt 2010m), located in a beautiful alpine. Some marmots benefit also from the last few days of Sun!
A bridge crosses the torrent of the Glière, and immediately after, we enter the Vanoise national park.

The path continues on a trail bordered by walls of stone, and of large logs planted in the mountain. Indeed, we take the same route as the traders of the 16th and 17th centuries. These large logs then allowed the time travellers to not get lost during storms or winter sailings.
Eventually arriving at Lake of cows, famous for his passage to Ford. A few stones are frozen, and I lack to fall several times. Fortunately, the safe foot, determination (and lucky) have this delicate test.

Ascension left the mountain pastures to find glacial moraines, with great case (3852m) which overlooks the landscape. Eventually arriving at round Lake, located just below the great case. On the right, the needle of the Vanoise rises majestically, while in the face, can be seen the pass, and the glaciers of the High-Maurienne (Grand rock black, Pointe de Vallonbrun). The refuge is located a few metres, on the right (alt 2515m). It took me 2: 25 p.m. to mount, instead of the 3heures in the Fontannettes. Small meal in the middle of this glacial environment, and it departed for the descent.

The trail passes a replat grassy, full of marmots détallent to each exit of turn. You then arrive at the Lake of plates, completely dry, which it then runs through the middle.
The suite is more technical: the path winds through the lapiaz witnesses of an unfortunately gone ice age. These lapiaz made slippery by a few streams which descend from the Vanoise Glaciers, that can be seen on the left.
Continue the descent, under the benevolent eye of the needle Arcelin (2643m) and the Grand Marchet (2651m). Pralognan cabins are in view.

Eventually catch up with a forest road, shortly before the site of water. Simply cross the bridge of the Crucible, and continue a few meters to get to the starting point. Length of descent: 2: 10 pm

In summary, superb ride, in a beautiful, little difficult ice environment.

The view on case-sensitive Grande and its glacier is impressive.
On the way home this evening, and by looking at the photos, I could see the glacier retreated unfortunately well.
