The species feeds its larvae with paralyzed caterpillars from the family noctuidae, especially those species that feed on the roots of plants and therefore live in the ground. That's why the wasp can often be observed walking around, busily ausculting the soil with its antennae.
For those who read French :
although the discussion in there is obsolete, as we now know there is no "unknown sense" involved ! But a description by Fabre is always worth reading...
