Rhea of America (in Spanish Nandu) is a species of bird in South America next to the ostrich. This is the largest bird of America, adults weighing 25 kilos for a height at the head of 1.50 m.

Rhea America is threatened with extinction. It is indeed driven by farmers, rheas eating certain crops. In addition, eggs are collected for consumption and their habitat is shrinking constantly.

They live preferably in areas of open grassland and there is the large vegetation and stay near a water source during the breeding season and each female lays two to three pale yellow eggs in the nest dug in the ground by the male. After laying their eggs in a nest first, females looking for another mate to lay a second nest. The call "nan-doo" of the male during the breeding season is also the origin of its name. Males vigorously defend their territory and then engaged in the breeding and young people up to age six months.

Rheas have an excellent immune system that allows wounds to heal quickly. Rhea fat is used as anti-inflammatory cream and meat is consumed in North America as energy supplement.

Flightless birds of the pampas of South America, the rhea is very fast and can make strides of 1.50 meters. He practices in order to escape, running zigzag. Particularly long wings for a bird does not fly, are then more or less deployed to serve as a balance and help maintain balance or to change direction.
