Nutria.
Average weight: 5-9 kg. Size: a body 40-60 cm and a tail 25 to 45 cm.
Of manners tends twilight and night, it can have a significant diurnal activity. Present in only a few French departments during its introduction, it is now present in over 70 departments. It has colonized regions such as the Marais Poitevin , the Camargue or the Landes to a lesser extent. It is now present in the south of France (Lot-et-Garonne, Pyrenees-Orientales, Hautes-Pyrenees, Aude, Gard, Hérault, Tarn, Haute-Garonne, Vaucluse, Var, Bouches-du-Rhône .. .) but it also occurs sporadically in some areas further north (south of the Ile-de-France (Velizy ponds ), the Centre and Alsace especially ...).
Cold is a limiting factor and their winters are fatal. Of tropical origin, the organization of nutria is not suitable for freezing like the beaver . During harsh winters, many have coypu's tail that freezes, which degenerated into deadly gangrene.
The coypu is recognizable by its four large incisors orange reddish.
In its native environment, nutria populations are naturally regulated by its predators , such as the caiman and the puma . In countries where it was introduced, it has no natural predator, at least in the adult. Indeed, young raccoons are sometimes prey to predatory mammals like martens , and birds like the marsh harrier and barn owl .
It differs from muskrat by its larger size and the section of its tail, round in the coypu while it is oval in the muskrat. ISO 800.
