English name : Alpine Chough – Scientific name : Pyrrhocorax graculus – Family : Corvidae.
---
Description : Size 30-38cm. Its plumage is entirely black and its legs orange-red. Its wings are short. The first year, the young bird still have a gray-brown nozzle and black legs.
Behavior : very social bird, it leaves in colonies in cracks and caves. It often planes while benefitting from the ascents along the rock faces. In winter passes more from time to average altitude, close to the villages and the ski resorts to exploit waste related to the human activity in mountain. One finds them in great number on the very attended tops, close to the refuges, where they become very familiar.
Habitat : common species in the Alps and the Pyrenees. Nesting observed from 500 to 3500m.
---
Photo : Verticaly cropped, resized and framed in 800x600 for TN.
My first photo with the Canon EOS 350D. Manual settings and focus.
Photographied during the breakfast on the balcony of my chalet at Chinaillon (1300m altitude) where he was waiting for my bread...

Quite an image, Chris. Looks almost B&W, but the yellow bill and red leggs are striking!

Happy new year to you too dear Taz, you've been missed. Good catch of this black bird and I love his red legs and yellow beak. And I can see the snow behind him too in the BG. Well done.
I hope the alterations are all finished for you.
Cheers
Janice

Hi Christian,
very nice portrait. Good colours and DOF. I like it a lot. Well done.

Hello Christian,
It's a very nice bird we don't have in Poland. I have never seen it in nature. Personally, I think it's very funny - all black with yellow beak and red feet. Looks like wears feet borrowed from someone else :-)
Best greetings,
Michal
