[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
Yesterday in the morning, I went out for some minutes in a thunderstorm, just before it started raining - I wanted to try and catch some lightning, but without successs. Instead I found this Harvestman on a beautiful flower, waiting for some prey to jump into its arms. If you look closely, you can see that its second leg on right side is missinge.

Class : Arachnid
Order : Opiliones
Family : Phalangiidés

Harvestmen, also called Daddy Long-Legs, are not spiders, but they are close relatives. A Harvestman's body grows to 1/4 inches long. Unlike spiders, which have two main body sections, Harvestmen have only one. It does have 8 legs like a spider, but they are much longer. The Harvestman also has a little knob on its head with two eyes.

Harvestmen live in fields and forests - but I also find them very often in my house, in summer, when all the windows are open. They can climb tree trunks or look for food on the ground.

Harvestmen do not have venom glands like spiders, but they do eat insects or other small creatures : aphids, caterpillars, leafhoppers, beetles, flies, mites, small slugs or snails, earthworms, spiders, other harvestmen... They can also eat decaying plant and animal matter, bird poop or fungus gills, when there is nothing else.

The harvestman's predators are the same as for the spiders, birds, toads, frogs or salimanders. Harvestmen release a foul-smelling odor as a defence against predators, and they can also drop a leg (or sometimes two legs) to distract a predator - this probably happened to the Harvestman on my photo.

Harvestmaen live only for one year, they die in the winter when the weather gets too cold.
These animals are nocturnal, meaning they are most active at night. Sometimes they gather in large groups on tree trunks and interlace their legs.

Bonjour Valerie,
J'aime votre Faucheux dans cette compositon agréable. Maintenant que je sais que ces bestoles piquent pas, je ne leur fait plus de misères ;-)
Compliments et merci

Salut Valerie
I too had my camera ready for the thunder storm the other week, but no luck! It was absolutly spectacular where I live!
This photo is another good one from you and the note is VERY interesting. I like the background colour and the focus is good considering the difficulty of trying to get all the legs in focus in the shot. Well done.

Wow! Valérie, great capture!! Beautiful and different subject. Wonderful colours on the harvestmen. You are so lucky, not for the thunders but this beauty for sure! With soft colours, great shot exactly!!

Hello Valerie, excllent colors, Bg, POV DOF Perfect details, Great soft colors and perfect details, TFs Kyle

Hola Valerie,
Bonita y bien compuesta foto esta "araña de patas largas" que por tu nota veo que no es una araña. Magnífica composición sobre la flor con una acertada escasa profundidad de campo, que hace parecer todavía más largas a las patas.
Bonita y creativa foto.
Un saludo, José M.

Well captured Valerie,
The details are nice, clear and sharp.
Good colours, lighting and exposure. The DOF is spot on and the POV is good.
Well composed and nicely framed.
Thanks for posting, have a great end to the week.

bonjour valerie
je trouve drole la façon qu' a cette araignée de mettre ses pattes, les couleurs sont naturelles,l'ensemble est tres agreable malgrès que beaucoup de personnes aient peur des araignée.
bon week end.

great shot of this spider on a bindweed flower. you did well given the lighting and legs.

I like very much this creatures, they are very interesting.
Although DOF is in the short side, you captured a very nice composition with such a perch.
I made a workshop to adjust lights, but of course that is question of tastes. Hope you like!

Hello Valerie,
very nice close up of this spider, it stands out very nicely form the background. Excellent POV and nice DOF. Sharpness, details and colors are very good.

Hi Valerie,
Nice macro with great colours and details. Very well done and TFS.

Hello Valerie,
Lovely shot! The problem with Harvestmens is that they aren't really very preety. It's hard to take an attractive picture of them, but I have no doubts that you did it! Whole shot has superb, very delicate colours and quite exceptional peaceful mood. I don't know how you did it, but I'm sure this is something special! :-)

Hi Veleire
Great shot of this harvestman.
Excellent colors and details and excellent POV. BG and great frame too.

WOW This pic is almost the same situation I photographed for my first post on TE !
Please you have to visit my page and tell me what do you think about it!

I think that my harvestman was bigger so I could use a less extreme DOF...also the flower is similar !

Anyway, great details about the body and great work !

TFS regards, Valerio.

Hello Valerie,
phantastic image of the harvestman, perfect on focus, in a most appealing diffuse light that makes it look to be suspended in the air above the blossom it is balancing on with its thin and fragile legs.
Very good, well informing notes.
Thank you! Best regards,

Hi Valerie,
What a super sharp, beautiful colors photo. I really like the softness of the colors and the details shown in the harvestman. Your composition and DOF are outstanding.
