English name : Red admiral – Scientific name : Vanessa atalanta – Family : Nymphalidae.
---
Description : Wing span 4.5 - 7.6 cm. Upperside is black with white spots near the apex ; forewing with red median band, hindwing with red marginal band. The winter form is smaller and duller, summer form larger and brighter with an interrupted forewing band.
Life history : The Red Admiral has a very erratic, rapid flight. Males perch, on ridgetops if available, in the afternoon to wait for females, who lay eggs singly on the tops of host plant leaves. Young caterpillars eat and live within a shelter of folded leaves; older caterpillars make a nest of leaves tied together with silk. Adults hibernate.
Caterpillar hosts : Plants of the nettle family (Urticaceae) including stinging nettle (Urtica dioica), tall wild nettle (U. gracilis), wood nettle (Laportea canadensis), false nettle (Boehmeria cylindrica), pellitory (Parietoria pennsylvanica), mamaki (Pipturus albidus), and possibly hops (Humulus).
Adult food: Red Admirals prefer sap flows on trees, fermenting fruit, and bird droppings ; visiting flowers only when these are not available. Then they will nectar at common milkweed, red clover, aster, and alfalfa, among others.
Habitat : Moist woods, yards, parks, marshes, seeps, moist fields.
Range : Guatemala north through Mexico and the United States to northern Canada; Hawaii, some Caribbean Islands, New Zealand, Europe, Northern Africa, Asia. Cannot survive coldest winters; most of North America must be recolonized each spring by southern migrants.
---
Photo : Slightly cropped, resized and framed in 800x600 for TN. I have also insert a little view to allow the comparison of the both sides of wings...
Difficult shot because the light was hard and I hold the Ixus above my head because the butterfly was on the top of a high bush...
---
To my friends : This week I worked enough on the external parts of my house and I am worn, all my body is painful... So next week we go in vacation at our chalet in mountain, with no tools, just the Canon Ixus and 350D !!! See you soon, with new photos I hope, because weather forecast seems bad...

Wonderful presentation of this Red Admiral Christian. It is nice to see the underside of the butterfly as we always see it from the top. Very nice and natural colours, great sharpness and dof. The composition is perfect. i like the idea of the top shot inserted in the lower corner.

Well done
Mogens

bonjour christian
je vois que cette espece est tres repandue, moi j'en ai publié un de chez moi et un de bretagne,la presentation est bonne avec de belles couleurs vives sur le BG.l'encart est sympa pour montrer une autre vue.
laurent

What a beautiful image of a Red Admiral butterfly! I like the way you composed the picture leaving plenty of space in front of the subject. The colors look natural and I can even distinguish the pattern on the dark rear underwing. The photo was exposed perfectly! I only wish the BG was more blurred to completely isolate the sharply rendered butterfly, but this is only a minor point. A great work of art! Thanks!

Good night,
Eddie
