These colorful insects are very common in my garden, and they are one of the most beautiful bugs I know. Their stripes and colors can be an excellent camouflage on some plants, and they can be very difficult to see. I saw this one while trying to catch a Large White - he was more cooperative than the butterfly and accepted not to move for some minutes, unlike the butterfly who kept flying and flying ! :-))

This bug belongs to the family of Shield Bugs (also called Stink Bugs), but not I'm not really sure about the exact species - I think it is Graphosoma italicum but I may be wrong.

Shield Bug and Stink Bug are common names applied to various insects of the Hemiptera order (the "true bugs"), in the Heteroptera suborder. Shield bugs have glands in their thorax between the first and second pair of legs which produce a foul smelling liquid. This liquid is used defensively to deter potential predators and is sometimes released when the bugs are handled carelessly. The stink is chemically similar to pheromones.
The nymphs are similar to adults, except smaller and without wings. The nymphs also have stink glands.

The nymphs and adults have piercing mouthparts which most use to suck sap from plants, although some eat other insects. When they group in large numbers they can become significant pests.

I Valerie,

Bonjour Valerie!

Yes, very common, very beautifull and very polite models :-) I like composition with bug and surrounding it parts of plant. Very nice, pastel colours of BG and interesting note. Beautifull or not, these bugs are pests, unfortunatelly :-) Great post my friend!

Hi Valerie,
Excellent composition, the lines of the plant stems fanning out are great. Very good detail on the bug and good strong colours. I think there is a reddish cast to this but I think that works really well, it adds a warm summery evening feel to the shot. The shallow DOF also works adds to that feel as well as softening what could have been a quite harsh background. Excellent work, a really nice shot of this stinky little fellow :-)

Hi Valerie.
It's my old friend. And I should tell, that from travel from Ukraine to France it has not changed at all. Also it is good itself and it is perfectly looked on a remarkable and expressive plant.

You have shared a wonderful, colourful and well composed picture. DOF and POV and colour palette are excellent. My compliments.

Hello Valerie!
Excellent capture! What a beautiful bug! Nice sharpness..

Thomas

HI Valerie,
It's a real grand macro shot by you of this unique creature. I like this composition, tones of color within the frame & an excellent details of the Shield Bug. TFS.

Ciao Valerie,

Merci et félicitations.
