English name : Bitter Beech Bolete – Scientific name : Boletus calopus – Family : Boletaceae.
Description : Boletus calopus is a large bitter tasting bolete but not toxique.
Cap 5–15cm, smoke-grey or flushed olivaceous, slightly downy at first then smooth, sometimes slightly cracked or scaly at centre with age.
Stem 70–90 x 35–45mm, robust, lemon-yellow at apex, elsewhere red although frequently brown at base, covered with a white or straw-coloured network.
Flesh pale straw-coloured to pale lemon-yellow becoming whitish immediately on cutting then flushed blue especially in stem apex and over the tubes, sometimes patchily red at base of stem. Taste bitter, smell strong.
Tubes dirty sulphur-yellow, bruising bluish-green. Pores similarly coloured, also bruising bluish-green. Spore print olivaceous snuff-brown. Spores subfusiform, 12–16 x 4.5–5.5µ.
Habitat in mixed woodland, particularly with beech or oak. Season late summer to autumn. Distribution, America and Europe.
Photo : Resized and framed in 800x600 for TN. Camera IXUS 400 - Focal 36mm - Macro mode - Iso 100 - Aperture f2.8 – Speed 1/160s - No flash – Handheld.
Note : In forest I prefer to go with the tiny IXUS than with the big 350D. For the shot I added a pine cone for scale and I tilted the Bolete to see the yellow tubes... This day I found 1kg of Boletus calopus and Boletus edulis ;-)

Hi Taz, still on holiday?
Your mushroom looks good, and comparing it with the cone gives us a good idea of its size. Well displayed - and did you eat it??

Hello my friend, I am glad you already have some fungi, our season is a bit later. Now it is difficult to find them, there has been very little rain.
As always you IXUS demonstrates that it is a great camera for fungi. It is an excellent detailed and natural capture. DOF is great too.
Last week 80000 Ha. were burnt in 300 provocated fires, that is almost the 3% of our land.
In one week it was burnt the equivalent to 4 years fires.
You have a satellite view HERE and info about it HERE :(
Best regards, my friend.

Hi Christian,
Seems the mushroom season has started!
Here it has been raining very little and I am afraid we will have very few this year.
DOF and POV are very good as are colours and sharpness. Only comment is the crop is a bit tight on the lower part.
