Frost flower

The one on the picture

This whole formation is hollow. It is composed from thin ice veils. Most were composed from only two, which where curved and joining each other (just like an empty mossel !). This formation has the most elaborate shape from what I saw that day : look like a bulb but it is all empty inside. On the left you can see beter one of the veil . Hope this helps understand the structure of this bulb . The bulb was about 6cm wide.
It was minus 8 degrees C. I found a dozen of those, all in one line and within a 10m distance. It seems very particular circonstances are necessary for this to originate.
They all originate from a twig/wisp that burst from inside because of the frost.

I removed the twig in the way and shoot again but the outcome was less good. Later all the ice formations were molted and I missed my chance to make beter. It was the last cold day.

Interesting post and note Jean.
We have ice here this week as well..Frozen rain drops hang from the branches, and the birds can't seem to get enough seed :)
Well done!

Hi JeanMarie,

The ice looks like very thin cloth. Coming from a country where it seldom reaches tempratures below -2 or -3, this surely is a very interesting subject. Good composition and sharpness. In your note you mention the twig and that does slightly distract:)

Hi JeanMarie.
I like your shot-observation so much. You have pictured interesting nature phenomena and have done this excellently. My compliments and TFS.

Sorry, I have no time. I have just returned from short business trip and hasten for work.
