Hoopoe (Upupa epops)

- pictured Animal park Bochum, Germany -

The Hoopoe Upupa epops is in the same order of often colourful near passerine birds as the kingfishers, bee-eaters, and rollers.

However, in the Sibley-Ahlquist taxonomy, the Hoopoe is separated from the Coraciiformes as a separate order, the Upupiformes. It is the only extant member of its family, although what are now considered subspecies, such as the resident African form U. e. africana, were formerly sometimes given specific status.

Hoopoes are widespread in Europe, Asia and North Africa, as well as Sub-Saharan Africa and Madagascar. They migrate from all but the southernmost part of their range to the tropics in winter.

Their habitat is open cultivated ground with short grass or bare patches. They spend much time on the ground hunting insects and worms. That particular diet may have been among the reasons the Hoopoe is included on the Old Testament's list of unclean birds (see Leviticus 11:19 and Deuteronomy 14:18).

The Hoopoe is 25-29cm long, with a 44-48cm wingspan. This black, white and pink bird is quite unmistakable, especially in its erratic flight, which is like that of a giant butterfly. The crest is erectile, but is mostly kept closed. It walks on the ground like a starling.

The song is a trisyllabic "oop-oop-oop", which gives rise to its English and scientific names.

The nest is in a hole in a tree or wall. Like those of its relatives the kingfishers, the nest tends to contain copious amounts of faeces and smell very foul as a protection against predators.

The long-extinct Giant Hoopoe U. antaios, lived on the island of St Helena.

Hi Heinz,
Wonderful shot. Superb colours and sharpness. Excellent and DOF and POV. Very nicely composed. Kudos.

Hi Hienz,
A unique and exotic looking fellow. This is a new one for me, so I am grateful for the excellent notes. Very well composed and framed. Spot on exposure has rendered the excellent colors and detail in the plumage. Very well done!

Hi Heinz.
Unusual and very nice shot of this amazing bird. Great pictured scene: elegant bird, twig and tree stem. I like how the bird illuminated and colored, sharpened and detailed. BG is looked as painted by pastel. Very impressive technique. BRAVO and best wishes.

Bonjour Heinz
Magnifique photo de ce bel oiseau qui semble très agile! Les couleurs et la composition sont superbes. La netteté est parfaite.Le bg est super beau, Merci de partager!
Bravo et au revoir....JP

Sharp and colorful.
The background looks very strange. There are some pattern on it as if reflection on the water surface. The bird is taken from below and this doesn't fit with a water surface behind. Also there is a strange blur on one part of the branch.
Digitally processed images are not allowed on TN. Some PP work can be done but should not give such irrealistic outcome.

Hello Heinz,

Excllent work great colors Bg POV DOF perfect details I really like this POV alot and the BG is so tropical really nice work,

TFS Kyle

Hi Heinz,
Nice image; I like the bird's sharpness.
Annick with a smiley;-)...this time I look twice:-)

Hello Heinz,
This one is not like any other birds that I have ever seen. Beautiful and one of a kind. Well done and seen picture.

This hardly looks real. It could be a stuffed bird against a painted background. It's a very interesting shot of a very interesting bird.

Hola Heinz.- Que hermosa foto y exelente pose, muy bien lograda con muy buen nivel de luz y contraste, me agradan los colores del plumaje de este pajaro Carpintero. Nunca habia visto algo igual. Luis52.

Guten Tag Heinz,

I would say that you have a fine specimen here.

In addition I must note that the sidebranch of the perch the bird is on is somewhat disturbing. Since the bird was in an aviary would there have been a chance for another shot, or a slightly different PoV? Thus avoiding the messy blending of the stick-spur with the bird's stripes?

Like you, I prefer to get my shots out of the camera without a lot of PP... so it is best to
"work the angles" not?

After all it is bad enough when the background
becomes an issue ;)

PS I am gonna look at some of your other photos
now, which likely would not have happened had JeanMarie not raised the B/G-PP issue... ;) ;)
< So say "Merci Beaucoup" to JeanMarie , please!

Auf Wiederschauen.

good sharpness and nice composed

Nice capture with interesting second image of the workshop.

I like it a lot: composition, POV, DOF, focus, sharpness, color, lighting, framing, notes.

I like it: background.

I don't like it: nothing to quarrel.

Very beautiful species very well depicted.
A cordial greeting from Buenos Aires... Ricardo

Hello Heinz,
Nice picture of this beautifull bird. TFS

Hi Heinz

Love this shot. Perfect details, well composed against a perfect OOF BG. :-)

Hallo Heinz,

Hi Heinz,
nice shot,

I love this bird. I first saw it when I was living in Ethiopia about 10 years ago. It is was not uncommon to see it in the north of that country I didn't get any good photos of it then. I saw it a couple of times again just last year in Egypt.

I would love to capture one sometime just as it has landed when it has those top feathers spread out into its beautiful mohawk!!

Focus and composition are wonderful, of course, the painted background is nothing you could do much about. :-)

Hi Heinz,
I just love these birds... This is just a pity you couldn't catch it in the wild, with natural scenery!!! But anyway, good shot! Marta
