This is
- Apoderus coryli
a small member of the snout beetle family
- Curculionidae
The beetle is found from May to September usually on hazel bushes (Corylus avellana) and occasionally also on alder and birch trees.
Body length: about 7 mm.
I found this curious and strangely looking weevil in a small nature reserve (Großer Fallstein). Some of my more recent postings are from the same place as for example Laothoe populi, Cidaria montanata and the fly drying in the morning sun.

Hello Peter,
Great capture of a species of beetle that I have not actually seen but I have seen the damage that it does to hazel.
Once again you demonstrate your steady hand to be able to accomplish such a sharp and well-lit image. The POV and composition are first class.

Very nice macro details on the small beetle. I really like the rich colors of black and red and the shine captured by your perfect exposure. This is nice composition because, with the outstanding DOF, it appears the beetle is looking over a cliff.

This must be a relative of Coleoptera2 that I posted a few days ago. The black and red colors are matched beautifully. Interestingly there are white patches at the legs of this weevil. Lovely pov and composition. TFS,

What a lovely bright coloured beetle. It looks as if the beetle is wearing shoes, and if its body was polished before the photograph was taken. The details are really spectacular A great shot here, with strong and vibrant colours. Great point of view. The red colour of the beetle stands out well against the green leaf. Good focus, well framed and sharp details. Thanks for sharing.
